Dim 4600 adding Seagate hard drive - new drive not recognized
It's this one
http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?&langId=-1&storeId=10001&splCatType=1&catalogId=10051&productId=169534&cmArea=SC3:CG6:smileyvery-happy:P1928:CL140461:SS1034645
I've got it installed but the new drive isn't recognized.
Do I have to move jumpers on the motherboard?
The motherboard is Intel Desktop Board D865PE
http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/rl/rl_confg.htm
or
set the bios on startup?
or
is this the problem?
The old drive is connected using ribbon.
The new Seagate I connected using Interface Cable that came in the box.
Do I need to go buy some kind of adapter?
Thanks for the help.
I forgot to say
I would like to do what you said
make the Seagate the primary via cloning
and then eventually not use the 80gb.
Here is more info from another post of mine.

Thanks for the help.

If you didn't choose to "Quick Format" then absolutely. =)

Way Faster!
I wasn't expecting that.
I just thought about more space for photos videos etc...
I should have done this much sooner.
Thank you and Bev for all the help.
I really appreciate the help!!!
I would still be in granny gear with my 80gb :smileyvery-happy:

It sounds like I've found some plutonium or something.
This thing sounds like a geiger counter.
I read before I bought it that this Seagate drive was loud.
I don't mind.

When I turn on computer it went into Windows XP
I went into explorer
C: is 500mb (actually 465gb)
F: 80gb
I shut down the computer and
turned off the 80gb F drive
and booted into WindowsXP
It looks like the new drive
was cloned just fine.

Hi DuttonFarmer2,
Well, mine finally finished and it said "completed successful" when I got in to work. It looks good and I really needed to do this anyway. I was running out of space on the 500GB.
So, I thank you for getting me to do this. =)

Oops,
Changed my settings and responded to the wrong message. hehe
One of the SATA ports is not populated and being set to "Auto" without a drive will generate the message. Check in the BIOS to see which one your drive is connected to and turn the other one "off"

Ryan
I've been upgrading an AVG free and since then I've run into a problem.
Every time I boot up
I go into DELL screen
then I get
Setup (F2)
then I have to hit escape
to get in to Windows XP
I still have
Here is what I set the bios to:
Drive Configuration:
SATA Primary Drive ...... Hard Drive (after setting to Auto)
Primary Master Drive ...... Hard Drive (after setting to Auto)
Hard Disk Drive Sequence:
1. USB device (not installed)
2. System BIOS boot devices
Boot Sequence:
1. IDE CD-ROM Device
2. Hard-Disk Drive C:

Removed as redundant.
