Disk drive is ruining my CDs.

Jump to solution

Help me - please! I just bought 2 new CD's and wanted to add them to my 'Windows Media Player', but when I tried to 'rip' them something strange happened - the CD player somehow ruined the CDs. I had it set to 'reject CD when finished ripping' so I would know when I needed to switch CDs. I didn't hear anything for a while and when I returned to my computer (inspiron 1520) the CD drive (D Drive) was just clicking and acting up. I manually ejected the CD and tried to just play it  to listen to my new purchase - IT APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN OVERWRITTEN! Upon visual inspection of the disk I noticed that it had 'smooth' areas, about 1-2 mm. wide, separated by ridges - no music.

I am sick, feel stupid and do not understand what is happening. I tried all I know to do to reset 'default settings' to no end.

Somebody - through me a lifeline.

Thanks

Hi oliver4life,

As I mentions above, CDs cannot be overwritten. So there is nothing wrong with those CDs.

That error code indicates your DVD drive needs to be replaced.

Hi oliver4life,

I suggest you to download and Install the Latest Optical Drive Firmware from the link below and restart the system. Visit the following website: http://dell.to/Mbe3zg

  1. Enter the Service tag of the computer in the box provided and click “Submit”.
  2. In the next page, click drop down arrow to select the Operating System which is installed in the computer.
  3. Under category removable storage, select the drivers accordingly and click “Download File” and save the file on desktop.
  4. Run the downloaded file which is saved on the desktop, and restart the system.
  5. Incase if you have an old rewritable cds/dvds try to burn some data and check the functionality of the optical drive.

If the issue persists run Dell 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics on Optical drive. To run the test, please follow the below mentioned steps:

  1. Switch on the computer, tap F12 at dell logo to enter “One-time boot menu”.
  2. Use the up/down arrow keys to highlight “Diagnostics” and press enter.
  3. Select Custom Test and select “Optical drive”.
  4. If the test fails, please capture the error code and let me know for the next course of action.

Try the above steps and reply with results.

Thanks & Regards,
Nikhil D

Hi, i tried your first suggestion, but had a problem with locating the right 'file; to execute the download. I went to your second suggestion and the optic drive FAILTD with the error code - 2000-0148. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.  Oliver4life

Ouch! It is what it is. The irony is that my warrenty just expired in February (I thought I had until April to re-up). Do you have any suggestions , as to where/who to get one from? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Oh - by the way - I don't know how, but the CD is ruined (I would send you a picture if I could).

Thanks again -Ooliver

Pretty much any SATA DVD burner will work. Newegg has a nice selection.

Sorry about your CD, but the only thing that could happen would be a superficial scratch. Those can be repaired.

Thanks Osprey (one of my favorite birds to watch for when I go to the Okeefanokee Swamp - they are so cool & fast). I'll let you know when I get a replacement - I may need you to walk me through the installation. Oh, will an 'Externaldrive' work via USB?

Yes, an external drive should work fine.

I need a replacement CD/DVD burner for my Inspiron 1520.  Could you possibly advise me where to buy one in the UK.
