Driver won't work for CD/DVD on Inspiron

My computer stopped recognizing the Sony DVD +-RW DW D56A on my Inspiron 6000.  It shows up in the device manager but says Windows can't locate the driver.  I went to the Dell driver website and downloaded the appropriate driver (R104295) and unzipped it.  Still nothing.  Is there something different I need to do?

Thanks,

Rich

The drivers for all optical drives used by Windows XP are already included.  The file you found is a firmware update for the drive electronics.  It is sometimes possible to restore operating by removing the listing for the drive from the Device Manager and restarting Windows so that it will be reinstalled.  If that doesn't work you can try this page from Microsoft:  Windows XP Upper and Lower Filters.  If running the automatic repair doesn't help, you can also try a manual repair that requires that you edit the registry directly.  You can find that method by clicking on the link to the Microsoft Knowledge Base article found at the bottom of the instructions.
