EXTERNAL DVD-ROM ISSUE.

WE HAVE THE DELL XPS410 W/ WINDOWS XP, AND DELL EXTERNAL DVDROM DRIVES.

THE SYSTEM DOES NOT RECOGNIZE BLANK CD-R DVD-R DVD-RW OR CD-RW

IN EITHER EXTERNAL DRIVES. (D & E).

PREVIOUSLY RECORDED OR STORE BOUGHT DISCS WORK FINE.

I HAD A PEEK AT THE REGISTERS, BUT NOT KNOWLEDABLE TO DETECT ISSUES.

THE ERROR MESSAGE IS:

D:\is not accessable. Incorrect function. Name in the target box is not valid.

E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function. Name in the target box is not valid.

I ran a Trend Micro check. No issues.

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

GERRY

osprey4,

Well I don't know what to say, but after shutting down the computer for a while, the drives work.

When  click on the desktop icon, I'm offered a choice as to which drive I'll use as a recorder.

One more trivia question, how do I change my logon ID from milroy, to merlin?

Thanks again,

Gerry

Here's the "fix" for re-naming the D internal drive:

Hi Gerry,

If your external drive is a DVD-ROM drive, then your drive cannot recognize or write to blank CD or DVD media. ROM means read-only.

Using Roxio, I'm able to copy DVD-R and DVD-RW from either drive (D) to drive (E),

and drive (E) to drive (D).

So why not with the desktop icons?

HERE'S WHAT WE HAVE.

THIS IS FOR THE LOWER DRIVE (LOCATION 2),

BUT IS IDENTICAL TO THE UPPER DRIVE (LOCATION 1).

I'M CERTAIN THAT I WAS ABLE TO DRAG & DROP TO THESE LOCATIONS

LAST MONTH.

THANKS,

GERRY

Hi Gerry,

Sorry I was unable to respond sooner but it seems you've got things going! And yes, you do have a DVD-RW drive, not a DVD-ROM. So good job!

With Windows XP, you can only use one drive at a time with the built-in CD-R burning utility. But Roxio will allow you to write to both CD and DVD discs and to either drive.

I'm not sure there is any way to change your logon ID. Sorry about that.

Hi Gerry,

Not sure if that can be done. Anyway, we know who you are so makes no difference!

Happy Easter!

Hello Osprey4

New issue.

For some reason? I have recently lost the ability to write pics, files, ect..

onto either of the internal DVD+/- RW disc drives.

The temporary files do show up in the window when I drag & drop,

however, when I try to write the files, no joy.

Also, unable to erase RW discs from either the drop down Dell menu or Roxio.

I was able to burn a music file from iTunes.

The 3 1/4 drive works fine.

I did a system restore to a week ago-no help.

All worked well after our previous session.

Thanks,

Gerry

Gerry,

Do you get any sort of error like, "insert a writable disc"? How about when you try to erase an RW disc?

Keep in mind that Windows will only be able to write to one drive, the designated burner drive, but Roxio should be able to burn to any RW drive.
