Firmware??

Found the following posts about a Philips DVD+RW DVD8701.  What exactly is firmware and how do I know if I need it?

"Have wasted 3 2.4x DVD+R DL discs now, each of about 8 gig. Tried to put around 7.5 gig on them but just 15 seconds from the end of the burn it says "not enough space"- theres is plenty of space!!
Burns other dvd RW discs fine, any ideas?"
"I need new firmware but suprise suprise Dell hasn't released one. In other words Dell have sold a drive that doesn't do what it says it does."

Thanks

Firmware is the software contained in the CD-ROM rewritable memory chip.
It is the software that is specific to a particular drive.  Firmware is
issued to correct a problem or expand the capability of the drive.

Do you need it?  No, if you are happy with how it is working.  Do not fix
something that is not broken.  Yes, if you have a problem that the Firmware
will correct or it expands the capability of which you want or need.

Firmware is not a driver.  A bad "flash" of Firmware may render the drive
useless.  Use only Dell issued Firmware during the warranty period.

Thanks for your reply - sometimes all the information I read on these boards really confuses me.
