HDD upgrade
I am upgrading the hard drive in my Dimension and going to install the old drive in a computer I am building. The old hard drive has the OS and the Dell restore partition on it. What do I need to do, to do a clean install on the old HD in the new computer?

Simply put your operating system disk in the computer and start the computer. use the boot options to boot from the cd rom drive and go through windows setup. Setup will find the operating system on the disk. When you get there delete the partition and then create a new one. When you have made your new partition, select it to install your operating system on. Setup will guide you through the rest of it.
To set your computer up to boot from the disk you will have to do it one of two ways. Some computer have an option for a boot menu at startup that will allow you to select the first device to boot from. For other computers you will need to go into the bios. These two options can usually be reached by pushing f2 or f12 when you see the dell logo.

I am installing a standalone version of Windows 7 Premium. I just wasn't sure if I should format the drive first and delete the Recovery partions or just let the install do its thing!
Thanks,Earle

Earle.
There should be no need to format the hard drive prior to installing Windows 7, because you have the option to delete and create partitions while carrying out a 'Clean' install of Windows 7.
Windows 7, 'Which Type of installation do you want' section has a 'Custom [Advanced]' option, that you use, this allows you to make changes to the disk and partitions.
The interactive Windows 7 installation guide HERE may assist you with the installation.

Thanks for your quick reply shesagordie. As usual, it was very helpful! And thanks for that link, I had the one to the Supersite, but not this one. It looks very helpful.
I have never built a system from scratch, but am going to give it a try!
Thanks,
Earle

Earle.
Good luck with the self build system, this can be a very rewarding project. :emotion-21:
I built my first one in 2001 with a Socket 370 processor and built the latest system, in October/November 2009, with 64-bit Window 7 and based on the AMD Phenom ll x4 965 Black Edition 3.4GHz Quad-Core processor.
