Hard drive BIOS password - secure or not?

I'm looking at making my system more secure given that I have customer data on it.  I suppose a first step would be to enable a hard drive password via the BIOS.  I'm not sure how secure that is, however.  Can anyone tell me about that?  I am also looking at something like TrueCrypt, which seems to be highly rated.  Anyway, suggestions would be appreciated.

with the hdd password enabled, the drive should be inaccessable if removed from the laptop.

Thanks for the reply.  I'm just still trying to see if it's easy to get around or what?  So far it seems that if you can subvert it, it's not easy.
