How to replace HDD in XPS 7100
After only 2 1/2 years my rarely used machine, my hard drive has died. Error code 2000-0146.
I might have created a backup when I first purchased the system in 2011. Is this enough for re installing everything? Otherwise I only have Dell's disc with drivers and what not. The system would always freeze up when I tried to create a backup through Windows - so I don't have one of those
How difficult is it to replace a hard drive? Also, is it possible that even though the dead one is SATA, can I put in a SSD? My faith in SATAs is waning.
Does anyone else have experience with a piece of hardware failing so soon, especially when it's hardly used?
Thank you.

Hi there,
Yes, hardware can fail at any time. That why a backup is so important.
If you created system restore discs when you first got your computer, that's all you need to restore the original operating system. It will not restore your personal files or any installed applications. See this article for instructions. Even if you did not create system restore discs, you can go to this page to order a replacement operating system disc (US customers only).
As for your hard drive, the replacement procedure is in your manual (go here for manuals). You do have the option to use an SSD but most people still find they need a regular hard drive to provide enough room for files and applications.

Hi,
As 'Osprey' said the hard drive needs to be replaced. If the system is under warranty, please provide the service tag and name through private message so that I can set up for a replacement.
In case of a warranty expired scenario, you can purchase a replacement hard drive here: http://dell.to/18sobtG
To send a Private message, click my Dell-User name and click 'Send a Private Message'.
