IDE/ATAPI devices
I've got a Dimension 8100. I've now got the full compliment of 4 IDE devices (the original HDD, CDRW, DVD ROM and a new NEC 2510 DVDRW).
I've found the addition of this drive, which I've now set as Master over the DVD reader, has seriously slowed the system down. This is to the extent that when I try to use the new drive with Nero, the system works slowly and then locks.
I've tried the drives on Cable Select which was even worse.
I've tried disabling the CDRW and DVDROM in BIOS and System Properties and this does speed the system up.
Has anyone else had a problem whereby the addition of a fourth IDE device causes major hold ups?
I also have upgraded RAMBUS RAM at 512Mb ECC, so memory shouldn't be a problem, and the processor is 1.3Gig so that shouldn't be a problem either.
Any help would be appreicated.

First, the Cable Select should be the best strapping method, as that is what is used from the factory. Some have changed to the older Master/Slave method, but being a computer tech I try to keep my customers systems "unmodified" from factory settings as that usually aviods problems or potential problems.
However, I've had problems with some (not all) PC's with two CD/DVD burners installed. I don't know why, but some will not work with two burners installed in the system. Try physically removing the CD burner and see if that does anything for your problem, not just disabling them which really doesn't "uninstall" them. Actually, all you have to do is unplug the IDE Ribbon cable to "remove" the drive for testing.
If there are any BIOS updates available from Dell for your specific model, you should also update as later BIOS' have support for additonal system devices. Whether it will help your specific issue ??
