Bought the Inspiron 1545 however no longer have the driver disk for it. The hard drive is Samsung HM160HI. I have tried AHCI, ATA and none but computer doesnt get to windows. Dont know what motherboard I have. I have tried to format the hard drive and re-install but now I just get a message saying "Missing Windows/System32/Config/System" Have tried to repair but it seems like it never gets fixed. I know the hard drive is still alive because when I try installing the OS, where it says browse for drivers I can see the hard drive and folders within it. Please help me.
What might have been there to make your job easier has now probably been rendered useless by your haphazard actions.
You should have read http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?docid=347576 before flailing around.
If you are able to hear the hard drive spinning noise then it seems that this might be just an software issue.
Firstly, to differentiate, try running H/W diagnostics on the system.
It is known as PSA test.
Power off system completely and then keep holding down the <FN> key on the keyboard and press the power button.
If you get any error code or messages from these test, hard drive needs replacement.
If tests pass, try re-installing Windows on the system.
