Inspiron 8100: Max Hard Drive Size

Hello,

I would like to replace the harddrive in a Inspiron 8100 laptop.  The BIOS version is A02 . The OS is Windows XP SP2

I am considering a ATA-6 drive by WD: Western Digital Scorpio WD2500BEVE 250GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive

Will the system recogize the full 250GB?  Will I need to upgrade the BIOS?

Thanks in advance.

Due to bios limitations (it doesn't support 48 bit addressing) you are limited to 137 gig max.  There is no bios upgrade that will enable 48 bit addressing.  The only work arounds are iffy at best and best not utilized if you value your data.

If you need more than 120gigs of storage space (the largest actual hard drive that is within the 137gig limitation) your best course of action would be to use an external hard drive for your additional storage needs.

The 8100 has an even harder limit - it won't boot if you try to install a drive larger than 120G.
