Lost files

I have a Dimension 2400 with XP. I have recently lost several files and also my games that came installed on my system. My scanner won't work with the twain programs and I can't do a system restore. I installed Norton 360 in Sept. and then defragged my harddrive. Does anyone know what the problem might be and how I can resore these items?
