My Inspiron E1505 won't recognize the full capacity of larger hard drive I installed

I recently installed a new and much larger hard drive in my Inspiron E1505 laptop, but my machine isn't recognizing that the new hard drive is now a much larger capacity. I first tried to use hard drive cloning software (Apricorn EZ Gig that I ordered from the Dell site), but the cloning of my old hard drive didn't work (possibly because my old hard drive was failing?). So I replaced the old hard drive with a new 320GB Western Digital drive that I purchased from the Dell site. I reinstalled the system discs that I received from Dell, but my laptop thinks that the new drive is about 54GB, and not the 320GB that the new drive really is.

Any ideas?

The problem is that you cannot clone the drive in its entirety.  For why, see:
