NEC 6500A DVDR/RW on XP question about eject and drivers
On my Dell Inspiron 700m I have the NEC 6500A DVDRW Drive. You can pull it out unlike most computers. A few questions I have.....
1. If it uses standard Windows Drivers how does it know the Brand, Specs of it? From the Firmware?
2. Is it connected to the Pc differently since you can pull it out? Reason I ask is it shows up as EJECTABLE MEDIA, Like a Thumbdrive, external hard drive, etc but other Pc's with Drives do not show up as ejectable

The driver is supplied by Microsoft so Windows will know there
is an optical drive present. All optical drives use that one
generic microsoft driver. Firmware is contained in the drive
itself and it is supplied by the drives manufacturer. The
Firmware defines the type and the capabilities of the drive.
Firmware also permits updates, if the manufacturer issues any.
The 700m has a Module Bay, which is where the optical drive you
are referring to is. The intent is to be able to switch items in
the system, for example, some users will switch btween an optical
drive and a floppy drive though the use of the Module Bay. The
device in the Module Bay does not show as ejectable media because
it is not such: the system sees it as a fixed device and not as a
removable one (unlike a USB device).

but it does show as ejectable media
how is a non ejectable optical drive connected to a pc?

It shows as an ejectable device, but there are no special drivers.
The system treats the device in the modular bay as an ejectable
drive. That drive is a system without a modular bay is not seen as
an ejectable device.

I guess what I am asking is what type of connection is used on the inspiron 700m and what type of connection is a cd drive that is not ejectable called
