NEC ND-1100A fails when burning CD's

>My NEC ND-1100A CD/DVD RW drive has been behaving erratically since about
>the time I installed Service Pack 2. The symptom is a frequent inability
>to burn CD's using various forms of software (Easy CD Creator, ISO
>Recorder Power Toy, MAGIX Audio Cleaning Lab, etc). About 4 out of 5 CD's
>aren't burned successfully. If I use the Windows "Send To" DirectCD Drive,
>to copy files to CD, it invariably works. The Device Manager in the System
>Control Panel says that the drive is workign properly. There don't appear
>to be any recent driver updates, and the Dell Forum doesn't have any
>similar reports of trouble. Oddly, the drive seems to copy to DVD's
>without incident. I've tried several brands of CD's and all behave
>similarly. I can't tell if it's a hardware problem or a software problem,
>but it doesn't seem to be a media problem.

Hi M-K,

After applying SP2, some people have had to uninstall their optical drive from Device Manager, then re-boot, whether this will help with your issue, I cannot say. The support articles for XP SP2 are increasing each day.

Best Regards

No such luck. Uninstalled the device and rebooted. Symptom remains.

Well, the complete lack of anybody with similar symptoms made me decide to fiddle with the hardware. Cracked open the case, reseated cables, no difference. Swapped in new burner, works fine. Still don't know for sure that it was a hardware issue, but burners aren't all that expensive these days, so I'm just glad that I have one that works.

MK,

Sorry for not getting back sooner, as for similar problems with the NEC 1100a, I dare say you are one in thousands. A search on NEC 1100a in this conference will verify that. Since you have neew drive and seem happy, that`s great. I have two articles at the CD/RW site for testing the drive, Section 12, article 3; Section 11, article 9.

Good luck with the new drive

Well, the cure was short lived. The new drive (a KHypermedia KDVRW8X) now displays much the same symptoms. Since it was under warranty when the symptom first showed up, I swapped it at the store, but the second one does much the same thing. Am now suspicious that Service Pack 2 has put the hoohoo on my CD/DVD burner, but I can't prove it.
