Random Error: No boot device available

I have a Dell XPS 420. A few years old now. Recently, I've been getting and error message on startup from the Intel Matrix Storage Manager ROM v7.6.1.1001. It tells me there is no boot device available. If I shutdown and try restarting a few times, the computer finds the boot drives and I can go to work.

I'm wondering what might be failing on the startup. Is it the drive itself? Or is it possible a controller? Any thoughts on what I should do to fix the issue are welcome.

Hi Chris,

It is possible that the hard drive is failing. For more decisive result, I would suggest you to run the Dell Diagnostics to check the hardware functionality. Power off the computer -> restart the computer, press 'F12' key on the Dell logo -> Select ‘Diagnostics’ from the boot menu. Please refer to the link if any error code shows up http://dell.to/17hZikk.

Please reply with the findings.
