Re-name internal floppy drives.
Hello again,
And thanks for your help!!!
As previously mentioned, all I would like to do is change the title of:
My Book (D:),
Hello Osprey4
As per my previous post, I'm trying to change only the name of My book (D:) to DVD-RAM (D:).
My Book (D:) currently opens up the floppy drive in location 1.
All we need to change is the name, not the drive path.
All of the paths and drive record/play fine,
and are accessed from the desktop shortcuts, or My Computer without any issues.
Here is what I have done so far:
|
As you can see, there is no re-name option,
and clicking on the name opens up the location.
^ So I went to disk management, and the two floppy drives are not show.
Is this the location where I can change the name only (not the drive path)?

Gerry,
So this happened when you replaced both DVD drives?

Sorry Osprey4,
Was not familiar with the reply protocol,
and my description of the floppy drive was incorrect!
Should have been DVD-RAM, not floppy.
I replaced two defective DELL internal DVD-RW drives with two new DELL DVD-RW drives.
As you correctly mentioned, the O/S assigns drive paths and letters to the floppy and DVD-RW drives.
For some reason the (D:) location kept the "My Book" name, and did not adapt the "DVD-RAM" name.
As previously mentioned, both DVD-RAM drives work fine, only the name for the (D:) drive needs to be updated.
So, the task at hand is to change the name (only) of the incorrectly labeled My Book (D:)
to DVD-RAM (D:), just like the DVD-RAM (E:) location.
By the way, I'm a retired engineer, however, my RF/Microwave background does not contribute much to this issue.
Thanks for your ongoing patience,
Best,
Gerry

Let me make one request. Please do not start a new thread. When you need to add more information or provide a reply, click the big blue REPLY button below this message.
Ok, let me try to figure out what you are trying to do. First, your floppy drive is drive A, where those little plastic things go that look like this:
So I don't think you are trying to rename the floppy drive. You cannot change the name of the My Book drive to DVD-RAM. The DVD-RAM is a DVD drive, so you cannot rename a removable hard drive to be a DVD drive.
So please explain again what you are trying to do.

Prior to installing the two replacement DVD-RAM drives, the disk Letters were as follows:
My Book (D:) WAS DVD-RAM (H:)
DVD-RAM (E:) WAS DVD-RAM (I:)
My Book (F:) WAS My Book (D:)
My Book (G:) WAS My Book (E:)
So all of the drive letters were changed.
I know how to change the labels, drive letters and paths for the My Book units,
but not the DVD-RAM.

Ok, I think I understand. You have two optical drives (DVD drives) and two external hard drives. But the operating system thinks you have a DVD drive and three external drives.
The first thing I would do is disconnect your external drives while booted in Windows. They should disappear in My Computer and disk management. Then open control panel, select each of your DVD drives and click remove or uninstall. Reboot with the external drives still disconnected.
Now go to disk management and see if your DVD drives are correctly labeled. If not, click Action, then Rescan disks.
Let me know if that works.

I don't kow how to post attachments in the reply, so here is what I did.
1. Disconnected both external hard drives, which disappeared from My Computer, and disk management.
2. My control panel (widows XP) does not offer the icons for the two optical DVD drives,
so I went into Disk management>Device Manager>DVD-CD ROM Drives>selected each of the drives
>right click for Uninstall, and uninstalled both drives.
3. Rebooted with the external drives still disconnected.
4. I clicked action, but do not have the option to Rescan disks, only Update Driver, Disable, Uninstall,
Scan for hardware changes, Print, Properties, Help.
5. There is no change in My Computer's DVD-RAM designations, My Book (D:) has not changed,
and DVD-RAM (E:) has not changed either.
Both of the internal drives work fine.
Should I leave the external drives disconnected, disconnect the internal drives, and re-boot?

Ok, I'm confused why your DVD drives are not showing in device manager. Can you show me what you see?

Here are screenshots, the drives are there, but the drop down menu does not provide a re-name option.
Also, all of the drives are working. But no joy on the My Book (D:) re-label.
Thanks,
Gerry

I'm kind of short on ideas, frankly. The hardware is properly recognized (correct model number shown, and the optical drive icon correctly displayed) but for some strange reason, the operating system is confused. It's possible that having two DVD drives of the exact same model plus two external drives of the same model is what is causing the confusion.

Could it be something in the registers?
I did perform a system restore when the issue surfaced,
which had no effect on the concern.

Yes,
There are two cables for each drive inside the tower.
I think one is power, and the other is logic.
I tried to transpose the logic/power cables-no joy.
And here is a register screen shot.
I did not amend the registers.
The answer to this conundrum is determining how/what in the O/S designates the DVD drive label.
Thanks,
Gerry

I should be more specific.
I transposed the cables from the D: drive with the ones on the E: drive to see if the labels changed.
No change, and the cables are back to the original configurations.

That was a good idea. I was going to suggest something similar. You might try unplugging one of the DVD drives, save changes and reboot, then plug it back in.

I'll unplug the (D:) drive, where/ how do I save changes?
Thanks
