Recording to DVD+R
I have the Dimension 2400 series and Sonic Record Now 6.0 Version. It has DVD+RW (E) Drive. I am trying to record on a DVD+R. It asks me to format the DVD and then it says," formatting failed due to general failure." What do I need to do? My parts list that came with my computer says 4XDVD+R/RW Combination Drive.

What is the brand name of DVD+R blank media you are using?
What type of media are you trying to burn? Data, Music, Photos, ???

If you are being prompted to format the disc, then you are using Sonic Drive Letter Access (DLA). I suggest you not use this program because of the potential for compatibility problems later.
To disable DLA, open My Computer, right click the drive and select the DLA tab, then uncheck the Enable box.
To back-up your pictures, just use Sonic Recordnow and create a data disc. Add your picture files just like any data.

Thanks for the info. I did what you told me to do but it still won't work. It ejects my dvd and then I get this message the says, "Please insert a blank or rewritable disc into the _NEC DVD+RW (E:) drive".
Can you suggest anything else for me to do?

Hi,
I have a few ideas... It's hard to diagnose these things from a distance, but it could be a simple fix...
Sometimes generic brand DVD's like the 'Staples Brand' can be inferior or incompatible
with certain Players and Burners - Even though it is labeled with the +R or +RW...
I've never had a bad experience with Fuji or TDK brand DVD+R Blank Media.
Another reason could be that the Sonic Software loaded on Your system is corrupted or missing
some file(s) for proper operation. I myself am not a fan of Sonic Software! There is a company
called Nero that has a solid CD & DVD Burning Software Suite for EVERYTHING: DATA,
PHOTOS, HOME VIDEO, MUSIC, Mixed Data, Back-up and much more. Some DVD Burners
come with an OEM version of the Nero Software Burning Suite. Definitely worth downloading if
you have or can borrow a copy of the Nero CD & DVD Software Burning Suite. You will need the
Nero CD sleeve with the Key Code on it, to activate the software once it is loaded, if You decide
to do so. Also make sure that You remove all the Sonic Software first... by going into your
Control Panel - Click On: ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS - Then Click On and Remove the Sonic
Software Suite. What is your Operating System? XP Home/Pro/MCE 2005/Millennium/98/95
Let Me Know... Thanks

I have Windows XP Home Edition. The Sonic RecordNow came installed on my computer when we got it about 2 years ago. I had always just recorded on CD-R's and had never tried recording on DVD's until a few weeks ago. I have three CD's that came with the computer for reinstalling. They are:CyberLink Power DVD, Sonic RecordNow 6.5 Deluxe Software and Sonic MyDVD 5.0 Limited Edition and RecordNow 6.5 Software. If some files are missing do I need to uninstall the program and reinstall it or just put the software in and would it patch or add the files that are missing?
Should I go ahead and try buying a different brand or try retreiving missing files first?
Thanks

The Cyberlink Power DVD is your DVD Movie Decoder Software (To Watch DVD Movies)...
So no need to bother removing or reinstalling that one.
You could remove all your Sonic Software and then reinstall it with the Sonic CD's that
accompanied your PC when it was delivered from Dell.
My heart felt recommendation is first check to see if another brand of DVD+R Blank Media
that might work. Maybe a friend with another brand can give you a blank just for testing purposes?
If that is not the problem?.. I would remove and reinstall all Sonic Software ( Sonic RecordNow 6.5
Deluxe & Sonic MyDVD 5.0)
Could You provide Your Service Tag # found on the little black and white sticker on the side of
Your PC. This will help me locate any driver upgrades necessary for your sytsem software.
If all else fails then consider my advice regarding the Nero CD & DVD Software Burning Suite
as a replacement CD / DVD Burning Software Program. Thanks

I got a TDK DVD+R from a friend and tried it but it didn't work either. Then I uninstalled my Sonic Software and re-installed it but it still won't work. I tried it both ways with the DLA enabled and the DLA disabled.
This program is what Dell put in my computer when I bought it and I feel like since it doesn't work they should replace it with a program that does work.
