If you don't have RAID, then there should no need to install the Matrix Driver, but you need to make the following changes,
F2 to enter the Setup.
Arrow down to Drives, then enter.
Arrow down to SATA operation, then enter
Arrow to RAID Autodetect / ATA and click enter to select.
Then click ESC to save and exit.
If you wish to use the Driver, you can find it
here
Bev.

Yes needs to be specific, here is the driver you need to install XP, download the file and use winzip or similar software to extract the contents of the exe file to a folder of choice, after extraction, these are the files needed to install XP using the F6 method, or slipstream the extracted drivers into the CD using nlite.

I also have a pressing need to install XP on my XPS-410. Being cautious I installed a second harddrive just to play with the installation. My first attempt was to simply edit the boot sequence to boot from a CD. Upon trying to use the XP CD I got the dreaded "pci.sys not found" error. After some googling I found that I needed the SP2 drivers so I slipstreamed using the method described here (using another computer running XP)
I tried burning this using the Roxio bundled on my system, but never got a bootable CD. So I downloaded a lite version of Nero and burned another coaster. This time I got by the pci error but encounterd "ohci1394.sys not found".
I think this was a red herring but I finally realized that I needed the SATA drivers. That got me here.
I've used nLite to slipstream XP and SP2 and to add the needed drivers (from the link). But this got me back to the "pci.sys" error. Examining the .iso image I saw that nLite was *not* replacing the earlier version of the pci.sy_ file with the SP2 version.
My last try was to use nLite only to merge the driver with the slipstreamed file(s) that I did using dos on the other XP machine and burning the image with nLite.
The machine now boots into Windows setup without the pci or ohci errors but then asks that the original XP CD be installed. It reads this for a few seconds and then asks for the SP2 CD at which time it enters an endless loop.
(ps. somewhere in this I got a Code 4 error, but I've burned so many coasters in the last two days I've lost track of the exact sequence)
Unfortunately, with my Internet connection that will never happen. I only have Sprint Mobile Broadband which is an absolute joke where I live, despite what their coverage maps show.
I can't keep a connection anywhere near long enough to download that. I'll try to have my son burn and mail me a copy, which is how I got SP2.
When I did this before with nLite, I had copied the SP2 exe to my hard drive and was slipstreaming from it, or so I thought. It turns out that the file was never merged.
When I repeated the process using the SP2 CD it did do the slipstream and added the necessary SATA driver OK. I was able to burn a bootable disk and install XP to my second hard drive just dandy.
Now to figure out how to dual-boot without tweaking the bios.
I need XP to run one legacy antenna analysis program and Autocad Lite. Otherwise, I'm not about to reinstall all of the stuff I have running under Vista at the moment, so I simply wanted to have a dual-boot option.
Now I've discovered that XP will wipe out all of my Vista restore points, so I need to think about this some more.
I'm also needing SATA drivers to install XP they seem to be machine specific so anyone know where I can find the drivers suitable for a Inspiron1525 laptop ?
download it using this link, after you download it, use winzip or similar softare to extract the contents of the R182441.exe file to a folder of choice, now you have the sata drivers you need.
