Studio XPS 800 won't detect external sata HD

My system is a Studio XPS 8000. I just purchased an external SATA enclosure. Tried hooking it up to the SATA jack on the back of the case. Would not recognize it. Luckily it is both sata and usb. Recognized the hard drive plugging in usb. Everything fine in device manager. ???

Re: Studio XPS 800 won't detect external sata HD

What OS are you using?

I know it should be recognised/work via the eSATA port as soon as you plug it in, but since it isn't, it would be worth reinstalling/updating the SATA controller drivers?

If those don't make any difference, try reinstalling/updating the chipset drivers?

If neither of those help, then all I can suggest is Googling the problem?

Here's what I got for 'External SATA hard drive not recognized when connected to eSATA port?'.

From my brief read of some of them, two common suggestions (apart from reinstalling SATA controller drivers) are:

1.  Try booting the system with the drive connected via eSATA?

2.  Set the eSATA/PATA Controller Mode in the BIOS to AHCI?

Speaking of the BIOS:  Have you checked to make sure eSATA is definitely 'enabled'... assuming it has that option?

From experience, I've found that:   “Beauty is in the eye of the beer-holder”!!
