Technical support/chat - DVD Burning
I just spent three hours on "chat" trying to fix a problem. No joy. Hopefully someone here has an idea. I was trying to burn a DVD while surfing the web. It was a large movie using Roxio DVD express. It quit at 90.3% and then my system locked up. Then I got a black screen/white lettering saying that an error had occured and that I could not continue. I rebooted, I should say that I tried to reboot. Got Microsoft auto repair instead. That ran for an hour then failed. Then BSOD. I unplugged this thing and rebooted. Tried Windows live Movie Maker..........again no joy. My pal in India took control of my system (that will never happen again!!) and had pretty much the same results. After he turned off almost everything I can burn a DVD from another DVD but not from files on the hard drive. I have tried many different files in case some were damaged. It would not complete the burn no matter what. I also noticed that CPUID reported a large increase in temps. All of the fans seem to be working. Indian buddy decided it was the driver for my network - ethernet card driver so he updated that. I bet you can guess what good that did. I have a wireless card but don't use it. Everything is hardwired.
Am I being an idiot or is something wrong here? After all of the changes he made my system looks like it's running Windows 95 at low res. Everything else seems to be working except I can't burn DVDs.
Thanks.

Jeff,
What's the blue screen error?
Since your system is new, it might be worth performing a restore of the OS. Yes, it's painful and you'd need to reinstall everything.

Hi John,
I was afraid you might say that. The BSOD only happened once and I failed to write it down. I have had three "black" screens where it read that windows was unable to shut down properly. (black screen with white lettering) I was so angry at that moment I did not take enough time to think things thru. I know the Tech stripped my system to the bare bones to help rule things out. However he left me that way without solving the problem. He is absolutely sure it is a network driver issue. I think it is either a heat or AV problem. When I ran an external fan pointed at the vents on the left side of the tower & disabled McAfee I was able to burn the DVD without incident.
I am sorry for ranting last night. I should have thought things through a little more. I have undone everything the remote tech did. Added the fan and so far so good. I begged the tech to talk to me before he made changes but that fell on deaf ears. ONLY give up control as a LAST resort!! I am going to give another day or two before starting from scratch.
is there anything in Roxio or Windows Live Movie Maker that would cause this kind of thing? I would think I have enough RAM and processor power to do two or three things at once...... Or am I mistaken? I understand that you do a lot of this kind of thing so any sugestions would be welcome. My apologies to you and the "Community" for going off. This is my first "store bought" new system and I just want it to work!
Thanks for your attention.

Jeff,
Believe me, if my old Dimension 4550 with a P4 and 512MB RAM can handle encoding and copying DVDs, you've got plenty.
One place to check for the error would be event viewer.
