The CD/DVD drive of my Dell Studio XPS 1640 makes a rapid clicking/ rattling noise when I turn on my laptop and when I load a cd or dvd, and it doesn't work!
I have a DELL STUDIO XPS 1640 that I bought a year ago. It has been working just fine until today when its cd/dvd drive stopped working. Although it loads my cd or dvd, it doesn't read it; instead, it ejects it. I want to know what caused the rapid clicking/ rattling noise inside the cd/dvd drive, and why this drive doesn't load and read cd's and dvd's anymore. The rapid clicking/ rattling noise sounds like a loose conveyor belt! It's the same sound that I hear when I turn on my laptop. This same noise comes from the cd/dvd drive. Please help me resolve this problem. Thanks!

Hi Nday,
Please try disabling the built-in CD/DVD burning utility by following these instructions.
This will not prevent you from burning discs using Roxio. I'm going to try to figure out what this is happening to so many people recently.

I am having the exact same problem. I followed your directions, and that did not work. Any other thoughts?

Hi Jrm5021,
The next step is to run the diagnostics from the F12 partition. I've got a link to the instructions below.

to be more specific, when i insert a CD into the cd drive, i here a clicking sound every second or so. i have tried blank CDs and a blu ray disc and it seems like the computer is not reading the CD at all. I purchased this computer in Aug 2009.... needless to say I am pretty unhappy about this, especially since i paid extra for the blu ray drive.

I have an Inspiron 1520 purchased in 4/2008 running XP pro sp3. Six weeks ago, had hard drive replaced because Dell support center informed me that failure was imminent. Took three days to download all the updates..LOL. In the last week, tried to watch a DVD on my TSST TS-L632H slim 8x DVD+/-RW. All I got was this horrible noise coming from the drive. Checked out the driver and it is set to 'Standard CD-Rom drives'. Down loaded R250068 to update firmware over five times. No change in the driver. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Frank

Hi Devin C,
Time for a new drive, it appears! Dell should replace it under warranty.

I also have the same problem just happened 6 or 7 days ago now .. I have the 1520 with Vista but my dvd rw drive TSST TS-L632H slim 8x DVD+/-RW makes this really sick noise but wont open it to read or play the dvd i put in.. I just ran the PC Checkup for just the cd/dvd drive test and it has failed the dvd linear seek test , passed the cd audio test but failed the cd write tests and dvd write tests. does this mean my drive is bad now and needs replaced or is it a software problem for the drive?
Please Help
Thanks
Cindy

I am having the same problem. I've tried disabling the built-in burning utility, updated firmware, BIOS. I ran the 32-bit diagnostics. The part at first with the blue-screen, everything passed. Inside the diagnostic utility itself, I can't run the read/write tests because everytime I insert a disc, it makes the noise and then ejects it.

Hi Dolsen27,
For that, you need to replace the drive. Sorry.
