Upgrade from Intel Matrix Storage Manager to Intel Rapid Storage Technology

I have a Dell XPS430 with a Raid 1 configuration managed by Intel Matrix Storage Manager.  I recently replaced one of the 1TB disks which had failed and rebuilt the Raid onto the new disk.  At that point Windows Search stopped working and I searched online for a reason.  I think it might be to do with the fact that the original hard disk  has a Physical Sector Size of 512 Bytes and the same Logical Sector Size, while the new one has a Physical Sector Size of 3072 bytes and a Logical Sector Size of 512 bytes.  The suggestion was that downloading the latest drivers would cure this but on checking the Intel website, it recommends upgrading from Intel Matrix Storage Manager to Intel Rapid Storage Manager.  I have downloaded this package but their advice is to check with my hardware manufacturer before loading it.

Question:  Does anyone know if the Rapid Storage software just replaces Matrix Storage Manager and takes over responsibility for managing the RAID disks or might it break the raid completely?  Am I at risk of losing data?  Are there any issues or snags I need to be aware of?

Any advice would be welcome,  thanks

If you backup all your data and make sure you have your install media on hand then trying various versions of the driver are low risk.  9.6 then 10.1 by the time you get to 11.x i'm quite confident that its not going to work due to the 2008 age of your system.  As they go up in versions the ICH 5 6 7 8 9 drop as being supported.  Sata operation has to be AHCI to use IMSM or RST which is why there are F6 drivers.

Hi Jimcrawford123,

Yes, the Intel RST is just a newer version of the Matrix Storage Manager. You should not be at risk of losing anything from either hard drive.

Regarding your RAID, I do not believe it will work with a mismatch of physical sector sizes. At best, performance will suffer. You can either find an older drive that matches your original drive, or clone your old drive to the new one, then rebuild using another new drive that matches the current one's physical sector size.

Intel®  X48 Chipset     ICH9XX?
  Operating System
Windows Vista®  Ultimate
Windows Vista®  Home Premium

Up to 4GB 1066 MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM

Intel RST replaces Intel Matrix Storage Manager.  HOWEVER you cannot update to your hearts content from 7 to 8 to 9 to 10 to 11 to 12 to 13 etc.  As the drivers and chipsets get newer the older ICH5 6 7 8 9 etc are dropped from support.

Version 9.6.0.1014  may be the max for your motherboard

In general INTEL RST Version 10,11,12,13  ICH8

IMSM = Earlier Version of the Driver.

IMSM is NOT EQUAL to INTEL RST

Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) version 9.6 and newer supports 4k sector disks if the device supports 512 byte emulation (512e). Intel® RST does not support 4k native sector size devices.

What happens if I try to use an older version of the driver?

If you try to install the operating system on a 512e disk with a driver older than Intel® RST version 9.6, the install process might not complete.  This driver is not validated with your XPS and may not work at all. There will be ZERO support for this if its not working.  INSTALLING THIS DRIVER if its not working can lead to 100 percent loss of all data.  Do so at your own RISK.  Installing a version Higher than the supported chipset does the same thing.  All Raid Data lost restart from zero.

If the operating system does install, do not try to upgrade to Intel® RST version 9.6 without reinstalling your operating system.

As the versions go up the support for earlier ICH Goes Down aka not supported.

64 Bit OS is required for drives larger than 2TB

INTEL RST Greater than version 10.1 is required for drives Larger than 2TB

http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/218615en

Like other kinds of software, the Intel RST drivers are updated to keep pace with new technology. The Intel drivers found in retail releases of Windows 7 have a 2.2TB limitation. Rather than cut off the capacity at 2.2TB, the limitation expresses itself as the remainder above 2.2TB. In other words, the driver causes the Windows operating to see a 3TB drive as 746.52 GiB (or 800GB).

With 32 bit OS Both the partition length and partition start address are stored as 32-bit quantities.
Because the block size is 512 bytes, this implies that neither the maximum size of a partition
nor the maximum start address (both in bytes) can exceed 2^32 × 512 bytes, or 2 TiB

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg463525.aspx

The GUID Partition Table (GPT) was introduced as part of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) initiative. The maximum partition (and disk) size is a function of the operating system version. Windows XP and the original release of Windows Server 2003 have a limit of 2TB per physical disk, including all partitions. For Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows XP x64 edition, and later versions, the maximum raw partition of 18 exabytes can be supported. (Windows file systems currently are limited to 256 terabytes each.)

Thanks very much for this - I'll study it and see where this leaves me!

Thanks for the quick response.  Changing the other old drive to a matching one had occurred to me as an option.

It sounds encouraging but I'll check out the other reply received too, in case I might be stepping off a cliff.

Thanks SpeedStep and Osprey4,  this has solved my problem.

Taking Osprey4's comment about mismatched disks on board, I ordered a second new disk which arrived yesterday and I added this into the RAID using Matrix Storage Manager.

This had the added advantage that I then had a full system backup on the older working disk that I had just removed for use in case of problems.

Today I installed Rapid Storage Technology 9.6 as I have  a "ICH8R/ICH9R/ICH10R/DO/5 Series/3400 Series SATA RAID" on my system   and this is the highest lversion that mentions it.  (Thanks to SpeedStep I also had a direct link to the Intel  download area for version 9.6 which is hard to find from the home page!)

It worked like a dream and low and behold, Windows Search (which was the original reason why I started down this route) sprang back into like and is now busy rebuilding its indexes.  I assume that Windows Search performs some low level access to the disks and could not cope with the sector size issue with the older drivers even though everything else seemed to work OK.

Thanks again for the advice!

To upgrade to Intel® Rapid Storage Technology, follow these steps:

  1. Download the latest version of Intel Rapid Storage Technology
  2. Double-click the file to install the software.
  3. Restart the computer.

You aren't required to uninstall the older software.
