What and How to Map Drives - Question

I have a new Dell Dimension 8300.

How can I map several external firewire disk drives on my new machine - so they have the same drive letter as my old machine.

I do video editing and I need the external drives to be the "I"  and "J"  drives like they were on my last machine - so that my editor will recognize their path.  When I edit - all the video clips are referred to as I:\videoclips\clip1.avi etc.

Can I do this with re-mapping or something?

How can I make these external dives always be the I and J drive on each machine??

Thanks

Ray

Here's how to change the drive letter assignments in WinXP.  Remember you must be logged in as an adminstrator.

  1. Click on START button in tray
  2. click on RUN
  3. Type 'compmgmt.msc' (without the quotes) in the open box and click OK to open the Computer Management Window
  4. Click on 'Storage', then 'Disk Management'
  5. Select the drive to change in the LOWER RIGHT WINDOWN using the scroll bar ( and then click on the desired drive  to hi-light it)
  6. Click on 'ACTION' from the menu
  7. Click on 'All Tasks'
  8. Click on 'Change Drive Letter and Paths...'
  9. Click on 'Change' and do it...

Charlye,

Awesome - your directions worked like a charm!

I was able to change the drive letter to the one it needed to be - now all my software works!

Thank you for your time and expertise.
