What is the problem with my DVD writer?
my desktop pc is dell dimension 5100,which was bought in late 2005
in addition to the original DVD drive (no write function) that comes with my pc,
i added an DVD writer last year (brand ASUS), it states to function the max of
16x writing to DVD+-R, but for long there is a problem that it only functions normally
at 4x writing to my high quality 16X DVD , if i chose 8x or more it just burns the disc
dead or not mostly still functioning at 4x while stating 8x or 12x in the status windows
of Nero. I tries using other DVD discs but the situation remains, and I have bought a new
writer yesterday, which is pioneer 20x writer, but it still functions at only 4x, it takes more than
an hour to finish a standard 4.7gb disc., I have asked people in my local forums but they don't
have any good answers, I just don't understand what happens and feel so worried. Would anyone
please help me

Check that your drive is in Ultra DMA Mode 2 and not PIO mode here .......
Start | Control Panel | System in classic view | Hardware tab | Device Manager
Click on the (+) next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Right-click the channel
the DVD drive is on and select Properties. Click the Advanced Settings tab.
The Transfer Mode box should be DMA if available and the below that the
Current Transfer Mode box should be Ultra DMA Mode 2

Hello, I have checked that, but under the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers", there are four options to choose from. As follows
- Intel(R) 82801GB Serial ATA Storage Controllers - 27C0
- Intel(R) 82801GB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 27DF
- Main IDE Channel (p.s. I am not using English XP so my translation may not be exact)
- Main IDE Channel
I am not quite sure which one to check, but for the first one and two, there are no such
things (those "mode", "transfer" etc), so i choose that two "Main IDE channel " to look at
, but the two "Main IDE channel" are pretty similar.... I try to state what I see in their window
Main IDE Channel Properties
Device 0
.........
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 2
Device 1
......
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 4
Another Main IDE Channel is like this
Device 0
.........
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 5
Device 1
......
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 5
Which one is the one ishould choose from?

Everything you have posted looks good and is in order. Please post the
brand (Asus) and model of the drive.
Are the drive jumpers set to the Cable Select position?
Is the Asus drive connected to the end of the IDE cable?

That ASUS DVD drive is taken away and is no longer important as I bought a new DVD writer few days ago (and are installed)
but the same problem arise that's why I ask for help here.
My new DVD writer is 20X brand "Pioneer "20X DVD+-R as stated, IDE interface, I didn't check
but I guess it should be set as "slave" because my pc is dell dimension 5100, which comes with
only one DVD drive which is IDE so I expect they had set it master and connect it to the end part
of the IDE cable...
Um...I have checked my BIOS settings and I 'm pretty sure that the controller is set to be"ON"
i use nero 8 , using Verbatim 16X certified DVD-R which is 4.7gb , but it just takes me approx 1 hour to
finish a disc ... and I only burn around 4000mb....

Set the jumper on the old drive to the Slave position
and set the jumper on the Pioneer to the Master position.
Connect the Pioneer on the end of the IDE cable and the old
drive to the middle. You may have to swap the drive positions
in the system. Then check the BIOS and make sure both are
set to ON or AUTO.
It have been my experience that Pioneer drives like to be set to
Master and to be on the end of the IDE cable.
