Why can't I remove write protection from recovery media USB?

I want to add some important files to the recovery media I received with my laptop, but it is write protected and I can't remove it.

Please help...

Hi azroach,

Please provide the model of your Dell and operating system.

Did you search for information on how to do this? I did a quick search and found this article. Did you already try that?

If anything, dell knows how to do this since they made the *** recovery media

I've already been to that site and exhausted all the methods there. The application they suggest to use if the low level format tool doesn't work doesn't detect my usb

Bear in mind that you do this ONLY to use the drive for something else - removing the write protection destroys all data on the drive.  You CANNOT remove the write protection and maintain the integrity of the data on the drive.

Further, given that 16G flash drives cost as little as $5-10 these days, you're better off leaving the recovery drive as is and buying a new drive for use as a storage device (or make your own image backup using True Image, Reflect, etc.).

If you still want to destroy the data on the drive to allow writing,

see there.

So what exactly is your objective that cannot be solved by simply purchasing another flash drive?

Regardless of cost, in todays regard for rubbish - especially plastic, wherever items can be reused, they should be. I understand that these should be write protected to prevent accidental erasure, but see no reason to make unwrite protect impossible. Come on Dell, get your act together!
