blu ray not playing regular dvds please help!

my friend just bought a brand new inspiron 1525 laptop with blu ray player and we tried to play a regular dvd but it just comes up with "what do you want to do with this blank dvd" message - it's not playing regular dvds.  we haven't tried blue ray discs yet but need it to play regular dvds. can anyone help please?
