can't copy DVD

I'm trying to copy a DVD onto Sony DVD+R discs, my computer has a Philips DVD+RW DVD8701 -  Dimension 3000.  It looks like it reads & copies the DVD but when I put in a blank DVD, I get a message saying "insert blank or rewriteable DVD 9" and the DVD gets ejected.  I've tried an entire pack of 10 different new discs.  What am I doing wrong??  Also what is a firmware update, how do I know if I need one and where do I get it from?  Thanks

DVD 9 = dual layer. It's asking for a dual layer disc.

Thanks for your reply - someone told me there is some sort of program I can use to compress the data and not have to use dual layer discs.  Not sure what they were talking about.

Use clone dvd2 or Intervideo Dvdcopy.

Anikiup:

Thanks for the information.  Have you heard of a program that can be downloaded for free?  I'm not sure if the information I am getting is correct.  I did a search but didn't come up with anything.  The 2 you mentioned are available where?

The programs listed above are for making copies of commercial DVDs, a topic we're not permitted to discuss under forum rules.

Sorry about that - subject closed - no more information required

I don't think these are free applications.
