Hey, am having a similar problem.

I am using an XPS M1730 Windows Vista 32Bit.

My Disk drive is having a hard time reading and burning almost anything.

When I put a game disk in it or any other disk it doesnt read it, even if it is scratch free. The same as brand new empty discs.

The disks I usually ude for burning are Verbatim CD-R, sony CD-R audio, Verbatim DVD+R DL, Sony DVD-R. There are many version of those discs though like Verbatim CD-R Azo, Verbatim CD-R Printable etc. I don't know if it really makes a difference.

If I get lucky to read a disc and try to burn it, It does same thing. At the end of the burn process in Nero, it says burning fail. The disk might play in the car audio but there might be some faults like track skipping and bad quality. Regarding data and other media, disc is not readable at all. DVD movie backups, it skips scenes. That is if i get lucky and get it to read and burn. which is getting even rarely now in past 2 months.

I ran the Dell support Center, PC Check up and Ran a test of my disk driver. It passed the tests I picked for it. CDR and DVDR tests read and write.

When I use the same disks I used for the test, to play a game or burn doesnt read the disk.

Any advice?

My warranty doesnt end untill 27/07/2011. I leave in Cyprus and Dell's authorised distributor in Cyprus, is Nextech where I purchased my XPS from.
