dimension 3100 cd drive does not read dvd. should i buy a dvd drive?

for the 1st time, i tried to read a dvd in my cd r/w drive.  the green light flashed, but no files showed up.  i tried a 2nd dvd and got the same unsatisfactory response.

cd's work okay.

 

what can i do?

It's possible that the DVD laser has burned out.  However, it's also possible that you need to clear the upper and lower filters in the registry.  This can be safely done using Microsoft FixIt, which is available here:  fixitcenter.support.microsoft.com/Portal

Question: The drive is a combo drive isn't it?  Maybe a little dumb, but I just worked on a 3100 that only had a CD R/W drive.  It didn't have a combo DVD-CD-R/W.  If it's a combo drive, and you have no DVD software loaded, then the system will only be able to read CDs.  If it's a combo drive and you have DVD software loaded, then either the DVD lens is dirty or the drive is defective.  Check your Device Manager.  You may need to Uninstall the drivers and let the system reinstall the drivers.
