hard drive malfunction

Recently I have problems with starting up my Inspiron 1100 ( Windows XP ). I got message "System not found", and on BIOS - "Hard disc not installed". It takes few, maybe dozen attempts to reboot , and then computer suddenly sees my hard disc again, and works OK - until next boot...
According to Device manager, there are not problems with hard disc (Hitachi DK23ea-3D), nor with SCSI. I tried to remove hard dic physically and put him back, but it doesn't help...
Any advice? Thanks.

Try to run diags on your hard drive first. On the I1100, just hold down the (i) button (next to the power button) while powering on the system to start the diags. If you get any errors, take note of the error code or error message. If you get a drive self test failed, you need to get the hard drive replaced..

Back up immediately. Your drive is failing.

Run the diagnostics at boot.

Power on, F12, Diagnostics.

If the hard drive is failing, save yourself the time, energy, and frustration and just buy a new one now and copy the image over or rebuild it from your original CDs.
