Did you fdisk and format? A new drive must have both run before windows will recognize.

One other thought comes to mind, although I have NO experience with it. Did you happen to have a drive overlay on the old drive?

I have had exactly the same problem with adding a brand new WD disk. I have not had any luck in finding a sollution. I've even returned the drive and repeated the problem with the new drive. Dell on-line support will not provide any help. If I get an answer I will post it.

pat, if you are NOT using a controller card and trying to hook up on your present IDE cables, could you state your model, operating system, BIOS number and what you have tried so far to do, and what the result was.

Well I found the solution to my problem. I just installed a Western Digital 30Gb to backup my WD40Gb. I have a Dimension 4100 800 MHz running Windows ME with BIOS B4100-06. I was able to install my new drive, fdisk and format with no issues. When I rebooted I found that there was no assigned drive letter. The BIOS did show the drive there as did the Device Manager/disk drive info. I tried both drives on the primary IDE bus with both on cable select and then as master/slave to no avail. I then tried the new disk on the secondary bus solo, also to no avail. Western Digital support told me to return the disk thinking it was defective. I did so and ran through the same issues with the newer replacement disk. This time, with both drives on the primary IDE bus set to master & slave I fdisked and formatted again. This time I did not run scandisk and all seems to be just fine. I've re-booted the machine several times and It seems to be just perfect. I understand that this is not the answer you want if your disk has data on it from another machine, since you do need to format it again. Best of luck!



PS My reference to no on-line support was incorrect. I meant received no phone support. It was considered a third party issue.

I am having a similar problem.  My old operating system is Windows 2000.  Does that have an effect on things?
