of 3rd party installing mSATA & SSD
I own a Dell XPS 1647 & a Dell XPSL702x
I want to know whether my 2 laptops can accept a SATA2 or SATA3 SSD and what are the limitations in drive size support (due to older notebook mother board support)
The same issues above applies to whether these 2 laptops support/have a mSATA slot , on whether it can be supported on both of the laptops & their drive size support.

Hi,
The Studio XPS 1647 does support a SSD drive with a storage capacity up to 128GB to 256GB with SATA II connection.
The XPS L702x supports 256GB and 512GB SSD with SATA II connection. Both these laptops does not have a mSATA slot.
Please reply if you have any further questions.

Hi,
Studio XPS 1647 SSD drive comes in a 2.5-inch and 1.8-inch form factor. The smaller drive has a special carrier that allows it to fit into other systems.
The XPS L 702x SSD drive comes in a 2.5 inch form factor. The system specifications does not mention anywhere that it supports a SATA III drive however, theoretically SATA III should be recognized but will work with 3.0 Gbps/secs.
64GB SSD with SATA II connection will work on both the laptops. Please be assured about it.

Unlucky me.. only those that bought a >15 inch laptop /ultrabook since June 2012 supports mSATA slot & 6.0Gbps/sec.
Thanks for the help.
I suppose a 64GB SSD with SATA II will still do on these 2 laptops ? (assuming a Win7 with bare minimum installs)

Installing a SATA III drive will not be recognized by the laptops ?
Or just downgraded to just max transfer of 3.0Gbps/sec ?

Satya,
I bought a 60GB OCZ Vertex Plus R2 SSD (SATA 2) to fit into the Inspiron 9400. I used Paragon Hard Disk Manager Suite to transfer the WinXP (32bit) O/S to the SSD successfully. Swap the HDD for the SSD into the SATA connection. Unfortunately, the laptop will not recognize the SSD. :(
The Bios A10 at [ www.dell.com/.../6F82K1S ] does not have AHCI.
The DVD-RW is hardly functioning , hence cannot use the CD to perform a fresh-install, which is why I used Paragon in the first place.
