tsstcorp dvd+-rw sn-208BB DVDRW drive: Fail to burn DVDs and CDs

Since I gout my laptop [Dell Inspiron 15R (N5110)] in June 2012, I tried to burn DVD, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, CD, never succeeded. Because I have other computers, so never spent time to fix it by far. Today I even tried to burn a CDRW with a very low speed, it failed again.

Your help and idea will be very highly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Ok, that indicates the drive is functioning properly, so this is likely a software issue. Windows 7 can burn discs. Have you tried that?

Nero 9 should work with Windows 7. If you uninstalled Roxio, it may have messed up the upper and lower filters, so you could try that trick.

Hi LoveDellUser,

One minor point. Rarely does a slower burning speed solve a disc burning problem. Maybe back in the olde days but not today.

You did not say what operating system you are using, but I'll assume it's Windows 7. When you insert a disc, you should be able to see the disc type in either Explorer or the Nero Infotool, if you have that. Please tell me if the blank disc type is reported correctly.

Thank you very much for replying my question, sir.

OS

The original OS of my laptop is Windows 7 64bit; later it was upgraded to SP1 by windows system update.

Disc info

I tried to insert a DVD-R disc and after a CD-R disc. In Windows Explorer, both shown the same: "DVD RW Drive (D:)"

Using Nero InfoTool, the results are shown:
Blank DVD-R
Blank CD-R

* I checked the extended Info shown correctly the disc capacity etc.

Driver

tsstcorp dvd+-rw sn-208BB Driver:
    Provider: Microsoft
    Driver Date: Jun. 21, 2006
    Driver version: 6.1.7601.17514
    Firmware revision: D100

Nero 9
Nero version 9, I don't know if this version is too old. I'm using it in another desktop computer, Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, running fine.

Roxio
My laptop had Roxio per-installed. I used it, and it failed to finalized disc. So I installed Nero, unfortunately the same problem.

If a full Nero InfoTool report is helpful to locate the problem, kindly please let me know. I can post it, a very long file.

Again, thank you very much.

Thank you very much for your reply, sir.

The Roxio remains intact, I think. I didn't uninstalled it. What are upper and lower filters? I read these words from some posts from you.

I tried both Roxio creator start and Nero Express, and none of them can successfully finalize a disc. I never try to burn discs using windows 7 directly (thanks for letting me know) and I will try and let you know.

Thanks, again.

I tried burning DVDs using windows 7 directly. And it works well. So is it the problem of both Nero and Roxio?

What I would do is uninstall both Roxio and Nero. Then run the upper and lower filter trick. Then reinstall your preferred program. I haven't used Nero 9 but I definitely preferred the older version over Roxio.

Probably I would just keep it as it is for now. If there is a chance, I'd like to try the "upper and lower filter trick". Thanks a lot, sir. I am so happy to have you help me on the problem, indeed I can burn DVDs using just Windows 7.

My respect.

I have never used the Windows built-in burning capabilities, TBH, but I can tell you that either in Windows or Linux, inserting a blank disc prompts either OS with the typical "Blank disc inserted, what do you want to do?"

I will try your suggestion, though, since, like I said, I have never tried it in my life actually.

Thanks!

Hi Mauf,

There are two situations where a drive may not burn. First, it may be that Windows does not recognize the drive as a burner. Second, the drive may be recognized as a burner but it is unable to detect that the disc you inserted is writable. You don't need any third party application to diagnose this. Just use Windows Explorer and insert a blank disc, then try to send a file to that drive. Let me know what you find out.

Also, if I wanted to replace my drive with the exact same model, what part number is that? Is it possible to upgrade to a better quality brand?

And if I wanted to upgrade to a BD-ROM drive (DVD burner, BD player), what part number would that be?

Thanks, Osprey4.

What does it mean if the MS Fix does not find it necessary to fix the upper/lower filters? Or what if they were never there in the first place?

I have the same drive model on a vostro 3560 and it just won't burn, no matter what. Not even under LinuxMint USB mode.

I have uninstalled several burning programs (Nero Lite, CD Burner XP, etc) and nothing. Playback/reading is fine, burning is just impossble.

Any slim BD drive should fit. I can't recommend one brand over the other, but I recommend you purchase a retail box that includes blu ray playback software. You do not need to purchase from Dell.

Maybe it is because your use very low speed to burn the disc. For this DVDRW, the max speed is only 4x.

Since I didn't want to waste any more perfectly good DVD blanks, I purchased this:

And guess what? My drive burned it correctly 3 times in a row. I'll be...

So what does this mean then? I have to use ultra high quality media then? It's not always an option nor necessary.

Anyways, maybe in a few weeks I'll try again with a DVD-R, but not right now since I already have 5 coasters.

Not really, I never select the slowest speed. I actually use the max speed everytime, since the drive and the software can read it from the media and since I know I have a system capable of burning at full speed.

However this is a half won battle. My drive works, but only with very specific or even exclusive media? I'd need it to burn on any kind of disc, just like the one in my PC does.

But yeah, I'm willing to change my mindset to something like this is a very selective drive, but it does burn.
