E22-285 VxRail Appliance 4.x Deployment and Implementation Exam
I have taken the E22-285 VxRail Appliance 4.x Deployment and Implementation Exam practice test half a dozen times and score perfect every time. I have thoroughly read every piece of documentation including quick start, planning, installation, administration and network configuration guides. I have read white papers, watched demonstrations, presentations, white boards. I have found resources on the internet and Dell/EMC forums for troubleshooting. When I signed up for the certification test I was very confident.
My score came back. 47% - Fail. I went back through questions I clearly remembered including multiple choices to find I answered correctly based on my reference material. When contacting the test team they said the test was scored correctly. They also said the test was based on the training materials for the instructor led and on-line classroom course which I can't afford at this time. Frankly the only thing the course would provide me is how to answer certain questions on the quiz. I am completely confident in my knowledge of the product.
My question is this. After failing the test I have doubled down on my studies and understanding of the product. I can't imagine a question that I do not know the answer to. However, it seems that there may be a version difference where one answer is based on pre-4.x and another is based on current 4.x versions of VxRail. Also, there seems to be questions that may have multiple correct answers and the only way to know which one the test refers to is by taking the course.
For example, what is the command to restart Loudmouth on a VxRail node?
systemctl restart vmware-loudmouth
/etc/init.d/loudmouth restart
Searching the internet found multiple sites that suggested each answer. Does anyone know which one is the correct one?
Also to query Loudmouth the command is slightly different:
what is the command to query Loudmouth? (answer: /usr/lib/vmware-loudmouth/bin/loudmouthc query)
The test tries to trick you with one choice that leaves off the "/bin" directory in the path. It also lists another possible answer to use the "systemctl" command to run the query.
Taking the test cost $200. My concern is that obviously some of the materials I have are misleading me to answer the questions incorrectly. So even though my score report shows the areas I scored that need review how do I know what I am reviewing will be the right criteria for the test? Any suggestions?
At least the knowledge I have acquired has made me very confident in my ability to present, install, deploy, administer and troubleshoot the product. At this time I just want that to be acknowledged.

Did you have an answer?
I have the same situation, I failed the exam twice. I was pretty sure of my answers.
Maybe EMC could help us to understand.

I was contacted by the group who create the tests. From what they are telling me it is based on the curriculum, meaning the actual training course. They said I shouldn't reference random documentation downloaded from the internet. Funny thing is the documentation I used to prepare came directly from the Dell/EMC website. A combination of install, admin guides, site planning guide, spec sheet, etc.
The only thing I can think as to why I did not pass would be that they are basing the test specifically on information from the training course. Which may be based on a specific version of the product. What I feel is messed up is having multiple possible answers to a question that are correct. Or having an answer that was correct for a certain version and not for another. In any case there is something very strange and wrong with this test and I will not spend anymore money or time with it. I would like to see the answers and challenge them against what I answered on my first test. On my second test I was just second guessing myself.

just log in to your vxrail and try for yourself.
/etc/init.d/loudmouth restart is correct
systemctl does not exist on the host.

The E22-285 exam supporting the VxRail Appliance Deployment and Implementation certification was retired on Feb 1, 2019. It was replaced by the DES-6321 exam which supports the new Specialist – Implementation Engineer, VxRail Appliance certification.
The exam topics covered in these exams is supported by our training, but it is not required in order to achieve the certification if a candidate has the relevant experience with the product. We are careful to ensure that we do not ask questions on areas that are not applicable to the common practice or experience in the role.
The product versions, exam topics and weighting of the topics are documented in the exam description on our website: dell.com/certification.
After reviewing the exam description if you feel you have sufficient knowledge and experience to pass the exam without completing the training then it is recommended that you take the practice test to assess your readiness.
If the practice test identifies potential gaps in your readiness then it will point to the recommended section of the training. The practice test questions go through the same development and review process as the proctored exam questions and cover the same weighting of topics.
I hope this clarifies how our certification exams are supported by training and where to find the relevant information on the product version and topics of a specific exam.
