Converting a symdg from BCV/symmir to Clone/symclone

I have several symdgs used for manipulating symclones - mostly for backups.

I have one last symdg that is still using symmir.  Now I'm ready to convert it to our set of backup scripts that use symclone commands, but have a couple of questions.  Running 75 code on a vmax with solutions enabler 7.4.

Do I need to recreate the symdg with different flags or with -tgt for the clones?  The reason I ask this is when looking at our current symclone environments, the symdgs all look similar to the output below, the clones show up as BCVs, not as TGTs, even though this group is using symmir.  I know we wanted to have the clone target devices 'flagged' as BCVs so we could more easily differentiate them from the standards.  Would that override the 'number of locally-associated TGTs in the symdg show output below?

Group Name:  ABCDdg

    Group Type                                   : REGULAR

Device Group in GNS                          : No

    Valid                                        : Yes

    Symmetrix ID                                 : 000192601234

    Group Creation Time                          : Wed Sep 21 01:07:09 2011

    Vendor ID                                    : EMC Corp

    Application ID                               : SYMCLI

Number of STD Devices in Group               :   83

    Number of Associated GK's                    :    0

    Number of Locally-associated BCV's           :   83

    Number of Locally-associated VDEV's          :    0

    Number of Locally-associated TGT's           :    0

    Number of Remotely-associated VDEV's(STD RDF):    0

    Number of Remotely-associated BCV's (STD RDF):    0

    Number of Remotely-associated TGT's(TGT RDF) :    0

To convert your command syntax from symmir to symclone, do the following:

symmir Split the BCV's

symmir cancel the SRC TGT relationship

You are now ready to do a symclone create on the same DG with no DG modifications required (no -bcv or -tgt required either on the symclone)

Hi Jason,

Since I've got 83 pairs in the symdg, I take it I will need to cancel the SRC TGT relationship on each individual device or do you know if there is a way to perform a cancel SRC TGT on an entire symdg?

Thanks!

Julianne

Thanks Jason and dynamox,

One more quick question, with a (hopefully) quick answer:

If I cancel the symmir -g, but need to recreate it (for backout plan), would a full establish do it?  Or would I need to rebuild the symdg and associate the BCVs again?

Thanks for the great responses!

A full establish is all you need after a cancel to get back to symmir operation. If you have run symclone commands, you can do a symmir full establish after the clone has been terminated.

The symmir cancel with no parameters will cancel all relationships in the DG.

symmir -g cancel (this should work)

I agree, dynamox, and that is the direction we are headed.  This is the only remaining symdg that is using the symmir commands.  And it is also constantly causing us issues during backups.  I'll be very relieved to move to the symclone!

i would get into habit of using symclone commands, at some point symmir will be deprecated and you will need to modify your automation scripts.
