SCSI3 persistent reservation for SUN QFS

Hi

I have a question about SCSI3 persistent reservation volume flag be set on Symmetrix disks,

Let me explain ma case, i have 3 Solaris Server running Solaris 10 Operating System, I have also 10 DMX 4 disks share among them. The customer wants to use Sun StorageTek QFS, i found a primus emc87610 it talks about the SCSI3 persistent reservation volume flag be set on Symmetrix disks
.........
The SCSI3 persistent reservation bit is required for Sun Cluster 3.0 and above, VERITAS Database Edition/Active Cluster for Oracle 9I RAC 3.5. and HPQ TruCluster 5.x.
........

I need to know if i really need to set the SCSI3 persistent reservation volume flag for Sun Storage Tek QFS Disks, remember i wont use Sun Cluster, I wont use ASM,Oracle Rac they will use only QFS.

Best Regards

We regularly use QFS without the SCSI3 PGR enabled.

In past experience the only time I needed SCSI3 was on clusters with file systems active on multiple systems. i.e. Veritas Clustered File System and ASM. Also, for those systems that required it had a test you could run to make sure the storage was configured correctly.

Hi!

I checked this request with the elab navigator. (powerlink -> interoperability tools -> elab interopability)

No. Operating System Topology Required Director Bit Setting Optional Director Bit Setting Storage Operating Environment Storage Array
1 Sun Solaris 10 FC-AL; FC-SW (C) Common Serial Number; (D) Disable Queue Reset on Unit Attention (OS2007) Host SCSI Compliance 2007; (SC3) SCSI-3 compliance; (SPC-2) SPC-2 compliance EMC Enginuity 5772: .100.91, .101.91, .103.93, .105.94, .55.51, .59.53, .83.75, .85.77, .88.80, .91.83, .92.83, .92.84, .97.88; EMC Enginuity 5773: .123.83, .130.90, .134.94, .138.96, .141.98, .155.107, .79.58 EMC Symmetrix DMX-4

It says that the Sun Solaris 10 setup basically requires the C D bits on the directors.

Unfortunately i dont find any information about QFS in the elab navigator.

SCSI3 reservation is need whan one nodes want to reserve one device (for example: quorum device in cluster) and writes

the scsi3 reserve key to the disk. The other node or nodes first check the quorum disk scsi reserve area, if it is reserved, they cannot

use the shared disk.

I you use Sun Cluster SCSI3 reserve bit is required.

I dont find information in SAM QFS doc about wheter it is use SCSI3 reserve. I think it isnt use.

But to make sure, please ask your local Sun support, wheter SAM QFS is use scsi reserve on the storage or not. (I guess it isnt use)

Also note that SCSI3 reservation is applied not only to directors but to each device individually.

Can you share with me your experience on QFS? I really ran out of idea, your help is highly appreciated.

thank you, have a nice day.
