STD vs BCV

Jump to solution
Timefinder/clone target can be STD or BCV. What is the benefit of one over the other?

Usually BCV devices are unprotected. Thus you "save space" (but you loose data when a single drive breaks). :D
And possibly they are already in your box .. and this is a good way of using them ;-)

Well, one good thing that that you can differenciate between a BCV and STD device easily. If both are STD devices, it could be confusing.

SANTiki welcome to our support forums. If you have a few spare minutes, jump in our Coffee Break and introduce yourself :D

TF/Clone can clone data from any device to any deivce. The copy mechanism is always the same, regardless of SRC/TGT pair involved in process. BCV devices used with TF/Mirror (and without Clone Emulation) have a slightly different behaviour and we discussed about differences ages ago. Unfortunatly I can't easily find the thread. However the main difference is that with TF/Mirror you have to 1) establish the BCV to its corresponding STD device 2) wait 'till the BCV is synched 3) split the BCV and have your indepentent copy of STD data.
With TF/Clones you have a lot more options but you always have at least a few tracks waiting to be copied even after you "split" the target.

So when using TF/clone is there a reason to use BCV targets over STD targets?

That's a good enough reason to go with BCV. Thanks for your time.
