Symmetrix space reclaim confusion

First off, I'd like to thank the guys who helped me with my previous issues/questions! You guys are great!

My problem now is that I'm trying to reclaim space on a DMX 1000 - running 5671.75.75 and SE 7.01.

I have gone through the process of removing old split BCVs, supposedly recovering 2+TB of space (2416836 MB). However, it looks like I've only cleared 1553675 MB, leaving 863161 MB out there somewhere - unless my math is wrong.

Before:

               Total        Configured   Unconfigured Hypers Format

Total         ------------ ------------ ------------ ------ ----------
                   8808307      7160108      1635625    650 FBA
                   1118515         6521       382456    400 CKD-3390

Device Config      FBA    CKD   AS400  CELERRA
  -----------------   -----  -----  -----  -------
  2-Way Mir             147    N/A    N/A    N/A
  RDF1+Mir               36    N/A    N/A    N/A
  RDF1+R-S              N/A    300    N/A    N/A
  RDF2+Mir               70    N/A    N/A    N/A
  BCV                   140    N/A    N/A    N/A
  DRV                     4    N/A    N/A    N/A

After deleting BCV devs:

Total         ------------ ------------ ------------ ------ ----------
                   9926822      6476104       288835   1010 FBA

     Device Config      FBA   CKD3390  CKD3380  AS400  CELERRA
  -----------------   -----  -------  -------  -----  -------
  2-Way Mir             197      N/A      N/A    N/A    N/A
  RDF1+Mir               36      N/A      N/A    N/A    N/A
  RDF1+R-S              N/A      300      N/A    N/A    N/A
  RDF2+Mir               70      N/A      N/A    N/A    N/A
  DRV                     4      N/A      N/A    N/A    N/A

In the interim, I created 50 additional 17GB devices totaling 863150 MB and run a bin file that removed the EA controllers, as the CKD devices are no longer needed. Unfortunately, I'm having problems removing the CKD devices as they are static RDF. My goal is to reclaim 2TB of space to create new FBA metas. Am I missing something here? Thanks!

Sorry, forgot to mention that I did do a symcfg discover and updated the VCM DB after the changes before running the symcli commands for the After portion.

run symcfg discover and re-run your numbers ..see if they are still off.

i am confused, so you deleted BCVs or CKD devices ?

If the RDF partner box still exists on the remote links you should be able to convert the CKD devices to 2-way-mir, then delete them.

I'm not too familiar with mainframe devices, so try a preview on the symconfigure to see if it will let you do it that way.

The error you are getting is probably due tot he fact that the devices are RDF1+R-S

you need to convert them to RAID‑S then you should be able to delete them

Thanks, dynamox. I re-ran symcfg discover, and now I'm getting the correct number for unconfigured space! So the BCVs are totally gone now.

On the subject of the CKD devices, I'm still having no luck converting/deleting them.

First, I tried Paul's method to convert them to 2-way-mirror:

convert dev 0000:012b to 2-way-mir;

Run preview, and got this:

A device's mirroring and attributes cannot both be changed in the same session
    Device 0000 generated the failure

OK, I understand that... So I tried to convert them to dynamic rdf devs, but again no luck.

convert rdf dev 0000:012b to dynamic;

When run preview on it, get the error message:

The configuration server could not interpret or apply the change definition record

I have no idea what that last error message means.

Yes. R1s on this array, and there is a valid SRDF/S between two arrays with same R2 device names on other end.

are CKD devices still configured in SRDF relationship ?
