VCM Device

If the VCMDB is not initialized for the DMX. Will it be in WD(Write disable) mode. What are the steps that normally occur when some one runs symmaskdb init?

symcli uses syscalls to talk to VCMDB ..it does not have to be host RW.

My list database command shows

The Symmetrix device masking database has not been initialized.

So i need to initialize the DB as it is a new box. Are there any other possible issues? As my VCM device shows WD and its a DMX-3

Normally when you receive your brand new toy... I mean DMX, the VCMDB is not initialised. your CE should do that for you, however, if you have gatekepeers assigned to your host and you wish to do it yourself, you can. Having said that, this would mean that GK's have been assigned to you and that can only be done with an initialised VCMDB.
Hmmm.
Your CE should do it when he powers up the DMX. After that he should assign some GK so 1 or more hosts and the rest is up to you.

Are you sure you needed gatekeepers? When i initialized one of my DMX1000 two weeks ago ..the only thing CE did was to ensure there was a VCM device mapped to all FAs. Tha'ts about it, i simply zoned my host to one of the FA and after rescan i saw my VCM volume, i initialized it and off i went.

In your case the VCM is sort of a GK. So that's ok too. As long as you can "talk" to the DMX.

You initialised a DMX ? IMHO that only happens when you want to start all over from the beginning with your masking database. Is this your famous lab-DMX ?

So you only had storage failover without hosts.... Very suffisticated ;)
Probably on the same site as well ? Next to the Source DMX ?

Ha!! ..i wish i had a lab ..let alone lab-DMX :D. We have one DMX 1000 that was only used as SRDF/S target ...it just had a bunch of R2/BRBCV on it. We never had any hosts connected to it so its VCM was never initialized. We needed some temporary space so while waiting for new drives arrive for DMX3 ..we used this guy.
