convert FA to RF port

Hi,

We have DMX3 with 5773. We have a RF port replicatng to other DMX3 via fibre.

We wanna migrate from first DMX3 to VMAX via FCIP.

Now can, for eg : 7A0 is an existing RA port ...can i use 7A1 for another SRDF traffic to VMAX. They both will be RF ports eventually.

I know that we can't use the port 7A as half FA and half RF as the whole processor is dedicated for RF but here i wanna use them as RF for both.

7A0 in RDFG1 and 7A1 in RDFG2.

Is it possible ??? If not any real reason of wasting other port ???

Thanks

Re: convert FA to RF port

Hi Kavan,

No you can only use the 1 port an an RF director slice.

However you can create another RDF group and point it to the Vmax.

Re: convert FA to RF port

Hi Melbsteve,

Are you saying that other port of the RF Director slice , becomes useless and can't be used for RF as well ??

eg: 7A:0 is used and 7A:1 is unusable ?? This can be a waste of 1 port then.

"However you can create another RDF group and point it to the Vmax."  By this do you mean , i can use same 7A:0 to SRDF to my exisitng array and same  7A:0 to FCIP to my VMAX just by using different group?? I will use FCIP switches.

Does it matter if i uses SRDF/A on one group and SRDF/S on exisitng one??

Re: convert FA to RF port

Hi Kavan,

An RF director can only use the 1 port. This allows the processor to service this 1 port exclusively.

Yes you can use SRDF/S and SRDF/A through the same port.

Powerlink would be a good place to look for documentation for what you want to do.

http://powerlink.emc.com

The SRDF Product Guide would be a good starting place.

Re: convert FA to RF port

Hi Kavan,

Unless you have SRDF configured to replicate the data over IP (using the GiGE RE director), you will not be able to use both the ports of an RDF director, configured to replicate the data on a Fibre channel medium. (I mean to say you would not be able to use both the ports of an RF director, but can use both the ports of an RE director) !!!

Cheers,

Re: convert FA to RF port

Thanks SreeHari. I am using RF ports not RE so I will have to loose one port.

Re: convert FA to RF port

is there a need of both ports cabled in that case? We just keep 0th  port cabled and 1st port idle?

Is there a need of keeping both ports cabled ??

what's the point if you can't use it ?
