DELL UPS Management software not working on ESX 4.1. Shutdown script never triggered

Hi,

I have 2 Dell UPS 5600W powering 3 esxi 4.1

The firmware (ups/nmc) are up-to-date.

The Dell Ups software for vmware is the last version too.

The script shutdownESXi41.sh when ran manually works very well.

My issue is that when a power loss occurs :

- I receive emails from the NMC which is fine

- and vMA displays this and does nothing at all :

Broadcast message from root (Tue Sep 20 09:23:00 2011):

/opt/ups/UPSPILOT.TRA

Broadcast message from root (Tue Sep 20 09:23:00 2011):

1- What does the highlighted message refer to ?!

2- the script shutdownESXi41.sh is never triggered by the agent whatever the Cuimanager configuration I put.

(vMa runs on host1)

3- Do I need to mention a "notified application" in the NMC webserver configuration ?

Dell support on the Dell/Eaton UPS is very poor (no tag/entry on the forum, phone support doesn't deal with software issues....)

Any help very much appreciated.

Thanks

Re: DELL UPS Management software not working on ESX 4.1. Shutdown script never triggered

Christophe,

Since your post, dell released an updated version of UPS management software which should resolve your issues. There are two parts to the new software:

1) Multi-UPS Management Console

2) UPS Local Node Manager

Download at www.dell.com/.../DriverFileFormats

Dell's Mult-UPS Management Console:

• Ability to monitor and manage multiple power and environmental devices from any Internet browser or vCenter dashboard

• User-definable tree structure enables grouping, access and management of multiple devices across multiple locations

• Option to view groups or similar devices and all alerts from a single interface

• Auto discovery provides fast installation by automatically detecting devices on the network

• Ability to perform a mass upgrade of firmware reduces network management card setup and maintenance time

• Shutdown agent management enables safe shutdown of servers

• Power device asset management tracks moves, adds and changes of equipment

• SNMP devices are visible and their individual Web interfaces are accessible for editing and configuration

• Multiple password-protected access levels and support provide secure communications

• All the functionality of an enterprise-class monitoring solution is included for free or at a fraction of the cost

• Support for up to 32 UPS systems is included at no charge; additional capacity may be purchased

Dell's Local Node Manager:

• Helps avoid data loss by automatically shutting down computers and virtual machines/servers powered by a Dell UPS during an extended power outage

• Allows access through an easy-to-use interface from any PC with a Web browser

• Acquires UPS information through local or network communication and can be easily deployed on many computers

• Can be remotely managed, configured and updated with the Dell Multi UPS Management software

• Communicates with the protected device directly (by USB) or through the network (using a Web/SNMP card)
