OMSA/OMSS to iDRAC7 SNMP Migration Guide
The introduction of PowerEdge 12th generation servers brought the capability of agent-free inventory and monitoring from iDRAC7. With this solution, the inventory and monitoring of the server and storage attached to it is done without the need for installing agents like the OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) or Open Manage Storage services (OMSS) on the host.
During the first release of PowerEdge 12th generation servers (aligned with the OpenManage 7.0), the out-of-band inventory information was made available using the iDRAC7 interfaces, such as the iDRAC7 web interface, RACADM and so on. Until OpenManage 7.2 (aligned with iDRAC firmware version 1.30.30) consoles use of the SNMP protocol was limited to monitoring (trap generation). However, to retrieve the inventory using the SNMP interface, clients had to install host agents. In addition, only the SNMP v1 and v2c versions of the protocol were supported.
In the following OpenManage 7.2 release, these limitations no longer exist.
This Dell technical white paper, link, presents an in-depth comparison of the newly added server/storage inventory modeling using the iDRAC SNMP interface with the corresponding OMSA/OMSS SNMP model.
