PowerEdge T620 Fan Speed 75% after installing SSD

I just replaced 2x HDD that were being used for the OS on my PowerEdge T620 with 2 x SSD. Since installing the SSD's my fan speed is locked at 75% 24/7 and it's getting to be extremely annoying since this is being used in home environment. I'm not getting any errors for any of the drives and everything is running fine except for the loud fans. My CPU temps are between 34-36 celcius and Board Temp is 24 celcius.

BIOS and iDrac firmware are up to date. I've tried using the IPMI tool to send commands to the server to modify the fan speeds but I just get errors for any command I've tried that has been provided online.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks

Hi,

What were the ipmi commands that you used to try to lower the fan speed? Was there any difference from before and after?

So I tried following these steps as well someone posted regarding similar issue but with a GPU.

ENABLE/DISABLE Third-Party PCIe card based default system fan response:

1.      Download and install OpenManage BMC Utility.

2.      Enable the "IPMI over LAN" in iDRAC of the target machine, this can ben done via iDRAC Web GUI or BIOS Setup.

3.      Go to the installation folder of OpenManage BMC Utility, run the following commands:

Set Third-Party PCIe Card Default Cooling Response Logic To Disabled

ipmitool -I lanplus -H -U -P raw 0x30 0xce 0x00 0x16 0x05 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x05 0x00 0x01 0x00 0x00

Set Third-Party PCIe Card Default Cooling Response Logic To Enabled

ipmitool -I lanplus -H -U -P raw 0x30 0xce 0x00 0x16 0x05 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x05 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00

Get Third-Party PCIe Card Default Cooling Response Logic Status

ipmitool -I lanplus -H -U -P raw 0x30 0xce 0x01 0x16 0x05 0x00 0x00 0x00

The response data is:

16 05 00 00 00 05 00 01 00 00 (Disabled)

16 05 00 00 00 05 00 00 00 00 (Enabled)

I am able to disable the default cooling response logic but it only lowers the fan speed from like 77/75 to 70/72 percent.

I tried a few different commands but this is one someone else said resolved their issue.

-I lanplus -H 1.1.1.1 -U root -P calvin raw 0x30 0xCE 0x00 0x16 0x05 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x05 0x00 0x01 0x00 0x00

When I run this or any other command I get an error stating "WARNING: Couldn't compute FAST_CWD pointer"

Am I running these commands from an elevated cmd prompt with the directory set to BMC directory?

Thanks

I've adjusted some settings and was able to get the disable command to work and the fans are down to 52-52% but it's still nowhere near where it was before. The reason I loved my T620 was because it was quiet and I could keep it in my office without it heating up the room or distracting me from working.

Have you set the fan speed offset to low? The Fan Speed Setting menu is found in the iDrac menu.  During BIOS boot, F2 -> IDRAC settings -> Thermal -> Fan Speed Offset

Yes it is already set to Low.

Anything?

I can put the HDD's back in and fan speed is fine but I really need to use the SSD's for VM's.

You have done the changes that are available. The only other option would be to swap for Dell enterprise SSDs.

Gotta love the support. "Sorry for your luck but hey go buy our ridiculously overpriced SSD's and we think that will fix it!"

This is for a home lab so i'm not spending $800 on two SSD's.

Although I understand your frustration please keep in mind that these are Enterprise servers.
We engineer our servers to be as efficient with power and cooling as possible. That is only possible for components that we know the power and thermal characteristics of.

When an "uncertified component" is inserted we let the end user do that and the server will keep running,  other vendors do not even allow that. But with components we do not know the characteristics of we chose to be on the safe side and let the fans provide extra cooling.

I understand that but disallowing end users to configure fan settings manually is something many users find to be rather frustrating from a management perspective. I'm not saying make it should be a default setting but something to manage fan speeds based on temps would be pretty basic functionality.

The Dell response above is incorrect because Dell does this even with cards optioned and equipped by Dell in which the power and thermal characteristics are known and published.

My card came equipped by Dell in the server and is covered under the original warranty.  My Dell equipped card is an AMD FirePro S7000 Server Graphics System.  The cooling requirements for this GPU are: 10 CFM airflow cooling”.  The stated specs for each fan in this server, even at a low rotational speed of 2,300 RPM, will flow 16.9 CFM. This server has six of them. Spinning each of them any faster than 2,300 RPM is far over spec for this “Dell equipped” card.

The fan options in the Dell whitepapers and provided by Dell tech support are only options to increase the speed not decrease it.  If one reviews the Fan Offset options you will see that each option, other than default, states “increase”.

I would really like to hear how a Dell installed card with clearly stated cooling requirements and clearly known fan CFM is working as designed with actual physical facts. I’ve been a Dell reseller for over 17 years and have done millions of dollars of resale of Dell products but this is one of the most screwed up configurations I’ve encountered.  I can see some reasoning to over compensate the fan speed if there is an unknown 3rd party card but certainly not with a Dell certified, equipped card.

So please don't play the "uncertified component" card as these ridiculous speeds are set at the factory with Dell certified components.

Hi,

I feel like my T620 is way louder than it used to be, due to fans running all the time. I hate to ask, but how do I find out at what percentage my fans are running?

I appreciate any input.
