Server does not show it assistant problem with browser and cant find any devices.
I have PowerEdge 860.
I have I use Dell OpenManage Server Administrator Version 6.5.0
I am trying to install and use it assistant. I have never done this before.
I downloaded OM-ITAssistant-Dell-Web-WIN-6.5.0-2247_A01.21.exe and expanded and ran set up.
The SW told me that there were several programs missing and had to install them before starting.
I installed the programs, but then when I installed SQL, after it installed it then said I didn’t have the right instance name. I will quickly say I know nothing about SQL. Anyway I did some reading and discovered that I had to install SQL with a default name MSSQLSERVER I think. Or something which I did using the SQL software that the previous attempt had already installed.
When it finally installed I got the message
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IT Assistant will not launch because a dependent component is not installed. This may happen if :
Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls setting is disabled.
Enable Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls under ActiveX controls and plug-ins in the security zone that IT Assistant is classified in.
Close the browser and launch IT Assistant in a new browser window. You can disable this setting after the component is installed.
Note: If you install the component from the information bar (yellow bar at the top) of the browser, IT Assistant may still fail to launch on certain operating systems.
You have canceled the installation of the component.
Also, change the following settings in Internet Explorer and launch IT Assistant in a new browser window:
Enable Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Browsing -> Enable Third-party browser extensions.
Click here to proceed anyway (Not Recommended).
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I added the ActiveX controls to the server name in the security/trusted sites/custom level.
Not on the internet just on the trusted sites.
I followed the instructions about allowing enable third part browsing extension that it talks about.
I even found this web site.
http://magalan.co.uk/dell_OpenManage_Systems_Management_Administrator.html and followed its instructions.
Now two things have happened.
If I try to connect anyway from the console of the local server (where I installed the software) “ E.G. Click here to proceed anyway (Not Recommended).” It use to take me to the screen with all the options and the Dell openManage IT Assistant But now It just takes me to the a blank white screen. It seems in trying to get the errors to go away I broke the browser on the server. Eg it will not dislplay the IT Ass. Site. However if I go to the same web address from a workstation I still get all the “IT Assistant will not launch because a dependent component is not installed …” but if I click on Click here to proceed anyway (Not Recommended).” get the list of options that I use to see on the server.
So it displays on the workstation but not on the server, because I have turned something off on the server browser that is on, in the workstation browser. Both broswers are 8. I have tried to match the settings of both to make them the same but still no luck.
Secondly, I really have no idea if the IT assistant is working, it doesn’t seem to be showing any computers, including the server its installed on.
I know this is all long winded but I hope it provides enough info for someone to help.
By the way regarding the ActiveX etc warning. It is indeed possible that as the error message says “You have canceled the installation of the component.” Maybe the error is there because in the process of installing several of the programs required for IT assistant one did not install properly.

Okay, I think I found a solution.
I was able to get it working on my system. It appears to be a browser and DNS issue. I was able to get ITA to function by using https://127.0.0.1:2607 but it still came up with the component dependency error. I installed Firefox and still had to use the loopback address, but it got rid of the component dependency error.
So, use Firefox and use https://127.0.0.1:2607 and it should solve all of the problems. I would put in a trouble ticket to our development group, but since ITA was replaced with OME they will not accept change requests on legacy software. Let me know if that does not fix it.
Thanks

Ok I have sort of solved 1/2 my prolem. I reset IE 8 settings to default, you do this in tools/options/advanced settings reset. Although I dont know that this repaired it. I dont think so. But what I did next clearly allowed me to see the pages back, on the server I installed the software on.
I Turned the following setting off and on to see if it reproduced the problem and it did. I did the oposite that many NG say. that is in java console I checked the "Enable the next-generation java plug-in " strangely it is unchecked on the work station that it works on. So It works checked on WS but Must be checked on server.
However in both places I still get the following error.
Any suggestiongs this seems to be a recurring theme with this software.
Also I figured out how to get a server into the list of devices. But now there is a Big RED X where the server is. IM not sure what the big x means.
Thanks.

Hello col288
It sounds like a component that installs through an ActiveX control was not able to install correctly. Let's change some security settings, clear browser cookies, and see if it will attempt to reinstall.
After you change those settings close out of all browsers, reopen the browser, and go to https://localhost:2607 If the problem persists clear the temp files and cookies in the browser, restart the browser, and try again. If it still fails at that point then I recommend uninstalling ITA and reinstalling it. With the security settings for ActiveX changed it should allow the components to install correctly during the next installation. You can also reference the installation and troubleshooting guides on the ITA Wiki:
http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/systems-management/w/wiki/1762.aspx
http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/systems-management/w/wiki/installing-and-troubleshooting-dell-it-assistant.aspx
If that doesn't help let me know and I will take another look at it.
Thanks

Thank you for your suggestions.
I have tried your suggestions , but still not working. I set browser, deleted cache, re ins2607talled ita.
I disabled second network card (which was not being used anyway.) I removed and reinstalled java 1. 6.0.30.
But I still get then back to the same old
IT Assistant will not launch because a dependent component is not installed. This may happen if :
etc.... etc..
I have unchecked and checked the "Enable the next generation Java plug-in (requireds browswer restart) It doesnt seem to change anything.
I still get the error. I can log in and get my list of items, although i have set up a Range for one server (which it seems to find but puts into an Unknown group.)
Still the active x error seems to persist. By the way am I suppose to have two sql's installed that is, when I go to start on the server (2003) I see one menu item saying
_SQL 2008 and a second under it saying
_SQL Server 2008 R2.
I asume thats part of the Dell install, to get this up and running.
Anyway any thoughts?
Thanks.

I haven't forgotten about you.
I have actually been working on reproducing this issue today. I have reproduced the problem on my computer and I am having the same problem you are. The problem I am having is due to OS compatibility though. I am running windows 7 enterprise x64. ITA only works with Windows 7 Professional. Enterprise is supposed to contain all of the same functionality of Professional and Ultimate, but there appears to still be a compatibility issue.
Could you tell me what exact versions of the OS are on the client system and the server. Also, could you give me a brief rundown of the roles installed on the server(WSUS, DC, AD, DNS, ETC). We may have to use Open Manage Essentials instead of ITA. OME is the replacement for ITA, but it has several restrictions for installation. For one, it cannot be installed on a server that is the DC and that is why I'm wanting to know the roles on the server.
Get back to me with that information and I'll try to figure out how we can get this set up.
Thanks

Thank you for your help.
Well I will make this simple, it has no roles. This is a new setup, it will be a print server eventually. However having said that, I would prefer not to be restricted in its use, in other words If I want to make it a DC/AC etc. I would like the software to work with this also. I have another location that I want to buy another Dell and do this same set up on which I definetely want to be a DC/AD/DNS/ DHCP/ Print Server. Really I want to take this set up and learn from it so I can set up the other site with all these roles.
The Software on this computer is Windows Standard edition 2003 SP2.
The browser Im using is IE8.0.6001.18702.
As stated in the first post the ITA Software is OM-ITAssistant-Dell-Web-WIN-6.5.0-2247_A01.21.exe I also have Dell Repository Manager 1.3.124 Client and server on this computer. Also Openmanage Server Administrator 6.5.0.
I have read various things about Management Station and Managed system. I wish that those terms were different. They are very confusing. They both start with the same letters MS and both contatin the same sense E.G managment /managed and station/system. Very confusing.
Anyway I have read several articles from dell about them and differences, but have not payed too much attentiong to them, maybe I should.
When you say client I'm not sure if your talking the workstation that I have tried to connect to the ITA web,or the concept of a sql database client/ server. I'm going to go with workstation. We currently use XP, Prof SP3 The browser is exactly the same as on the server IE8.0.6001.18702.
Most of the work/ testing I have been doing right on the server. Although the fact that I get the same problems both on the xp/client. and 2003/server seems interesting.
I admit that I dont know anything about ITA and only a little more about Openmanage. But it does seem a bit complex setting up. Honestly the reason Im gong with dell is because HP charges 500 dollars for essentially the same software. For that sole reason I have chosen Dell, (Im not saying dell doesnt have other reasons but that was important to me.) I work at some remote sites. Im not there all the time, so if a raid array breaks I need to know about it.
The reason I got into this was because I really want the system to email me when a drive is failing, or the raid is broken. (SAS Raid Card)
I have set up on the openmanage the ability for it to email me when some events happen.
see www.tachytelic.net/.../setting-up-e-mail-alerts-from-dell-openmanage-omsa
But was told to get the warning for raid arrays and drives I need the ita.
If you need any further info or dont understand anything, as I say to all my end users, just ask.
Regards and thanks.

I'm glad we finally got it working.
Openmanage Essentials was just released a month or two ago. It has all of the functionality of ITA, but it is more user friendly. Both ITA and OME require OMSA to be installed, so OME is not a replacement for OMSA. OMSA facilitates proper communication with the BMC/ESM/iDRAC of the server. ITA and OME use the same versions of OMSA to operate, so there is not a different version made for OME.
2003 is not supported with OME, so you will need to use ITA for your current set up. Here is the Wiki page for OME:
http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/systems-management/w/wiki/openmanage-essentials.aspx
Thanks

Daniel,
You are exactly right it does work the way you have described it.
Thanks very much. Maybe this will help others too, I hope.
E.G Use Firefox and locally use https://127.0.0.1:2607 address. Great!
As I may have been mentioned I’m not much of an expert on the Dell software. I think many people put in the computers and never install the various components. I know, I get all these CD’s and wonder what on earth are they. All of this I really fell into because I was installing this new system and installed some of the cd’s to see what they were.
I was surprised to hear you say that the ITA is older than OME I’m afraid I missed that. (although I don’t know what OME is.) The whole point of me installing the software was to be e-mailed when there was a raid failure does the new software the OME provide that functionality obviously I would like to install new software and not old software that is not being supported can you give me any information regarding this does the new software gave me the ability to be e-mailed when devices fail eg HW Raid.
Does this software replace both bits of software I have. Eg ITA and OpenManage Administrator version 6.50 ?
Is the Openmanage I have the same as OME, I’m sorry I’m very confused, which software I should be using. I did think it odd that I had OpenManage and ITA. I’m befuddled.
Can you help me sort it out?
Thanks.
