Updates for r720xd

Hello,

I recently upgraded the Firmware and Lifecycle Controller Firmware on my esxi hosts to 2.65.65.65. My BIOS version is on 2.5.2. My goal is to upgrade my Esxi hosts from 6.0 to 6.5. my questions are:

1.) Is that BIOS version sufficient?

2.) How do I find the version of drivers and firmware for my NIC cards so that I can make sure that they will be compatible with 6.5?

Thanks.

Hello,

You can refer to this page from VMware https://dell.to/2Mymbzo for their compatibility guide. Referring to the guide, you will need 2.5.4 BIOS version.

For cards, you may need to search in the guide and check for driver downloads and firmware versions within the page.

Let me know if you have any questions.

As your current BIOS version is released 5 years back, I would recommend incremental upgrade of BIOS rather than updating it straight. You can try 2.6.1 and 2.8.0 first. I would also recommend to update iDRAC FW also along with BIOS.

Hi,

the 2.5.4 version will be the 100% supported version but the next versions souhld also work (they contain all previous fix). There is no reason that the lastest bios version not work but in that case you could apply a rollback if needed. Moreover the compatibility matrix is not necessarily up to date.

For your network card you have to search on this compatiblity list using the network card vendor name.

Hope that help.

I'm showing that the latest BIOS version is 2.9.0. Am I safe to update straight to that version?

Stephane,

Are you saying that I would be safe to update to 2.9.0 from my current version?

You can find download iDRAC FW from below location. If you scroll down on the page you will also get an option to see previous versions which can be used for incremental updates if required.

Hello,

When I attempted to update my BIOS version to 2.5.4 through the Lifecycle Controller, I got an error "Unable to verify package signature.SUP0525. Recommended action: Download the latest supported Update Package from your service provider and retry the operation." The file I attempted to use was BIOS_CR1RR_Win64_2.5.4.EXE. Did I download the wrong file?

Hi,

It may seem that the Lifecycle controller is out of date. It's recommended to update the Lifecycle Controller then BIOS.

Hello,

please try to refresh again iDRAC and LIfecycle controller with the file I suggested, and then try again with the BIOS.

Thanks

Marco

Hello,

I attempted the refresh of the Lifecycle Controller with that file, and I'm still getting the same result when I attempt to upgrade the BIOS.

Would you be open to trying another update method? If so, I'd like to suggest navigating to the iDRAC web GUI and applying the firmware package there. I'd test with both 2.5.4 and 2.6.1, just to rule out the possibility of there being an issue with the update package.

If this is something you'd be open to testing, you can find the instructions linked below. You'd want to reference the steps for iDRAC7.
