iDRAC8: Update failed

Hello,

we have two PowerEdgeR630 servers.

So I need to update the iDRAC, because there is a security issue.

Current firmware:  2.15.10.10

Update to firmware: 2.50.50.50

Error-Message: RED004: The job cannot be run because of an unknown issue.

After that, I updated the BIOS to the current version (2.7.1) and retry it again. But the error stays.

Best Regards

Christian

I talked to the support:

They recommend me to execute the command "racadm racreset hard" via cli.

After that the MAC-Adress of the iDRAC network interface changed to "00:00:00:00:00:01".

Now the update was possible.

So they changed to motherboard.

- Problem solved -

Hi Christian,

We have also experienced this issue with R630's. The jump you are trying to make between iDRAC versions is quite big. I would suggest upgrading using less of a jump, perhaps 2.41.40.40 which is downloadable here http://www.dell.com/support/home/uk/en/ukbsdt1/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=4950Y you can then login to your iDRAC interface and deploy from there.

All the best,

Dave

Hello Dave,

thank you for your advice.

Unfortunately your file not working: "Cannot extract payload from the package"

So I dowloaded the same version from dell support center (with my servicetag).

iDRAC-with-Lifecycle-Controller_Firmware_4950Y_WN32_2.41.40.40_A00.EXE

The same error occurs: "RED004: The job cannot be run because of an unknown issue"

Hi Christian,

What method are you using to update? Try another method if you haven't already done so.

The error is caused by corruption of the internal storage that stores the driver content. There was a fix in 2.41.41. See if you are able to update 1st to that version.

Thanks,

Hello Jimmy,

I already tried the v2.41. But It also fails (see my previous post).

I can use only the local way. Networkshare, FTP and HTTP are not possible.

Can you share the command used to run the update

I don't use any (CLI) command.

I perform this via iDRAC-Webinterface (see screenshots above)

Hi Christian

I had the same problem with a T630, upgrading from 2.15.10.10 to 2.52.52.52 and resolved the issue by following the Installation instructions in the Release Notes that say:

• From the management station, remotely update the firmware using the iDRAC
  web interface:
  1. Extract the firmware image self-extracting file to the management station.
  2. Open the iDRAC web interface using a supported web browser.
  3. Log in as administrator.
  4. Go to Overview -> iDRAC Settings -> Update and Rollback -> Update. The
     Firmware Update page is displayed.
  5. Click Browse, select the .d7 firmware image file that you extracted (step 1),
or the Dell Update Package (DUP) for Windows, and click Upload.
  6. Wait for the upload to complete. After the upload is completed, the Update
Details section displays the firmware file uploaded to iDRAC and the status.
  7. Select the firmware file and click Install or Install and Reboot. If it is
a DUP, Install dynamically changes to Install and Reboot and at the same
time the Install Next Reboot is activated.
When you click Install and Reboot or Install Next Reboot, the message
    “Updating Job Queue” is displayed.
  8. Click OK. The Job Queue page is displayed, where you can view and manage the
     firmware update.
After the update is completed, iDRAC restarts automatically.

You can extract the firmware.d7 image by opening the EXE file with a ZIP extraction utility (e.g. WinZip).

Cheers

Stefan
