Dell Streak Froyo (2.2) Update Frequently Asked Questions

Hi Folks,
I created this FAQ to share updated information and answers to some of the more popular questions we've been getting. Feel free to post any additional questions and/or comments here regarding the Froyo update on the Dell Streak.

Thanks,
Amy

Q. What if I am not a current Streak owner, but I plan to buy from Best Buy or Dell directly in the U.S.? Will Froyo be pre-installed?
UPDATED 4-8-11
A. For those AT&T customers who purchased a Streak from Best Buy prior to the Froyo update, here is a link to download the update if you don’t have it already: http://mobileupdate.dell.com/PackageProductionLocations/Streak_340_14844_31.pkg
Also, Streak with Froyo pre-installed is currently available on www.dell.com in the U.S.

Q. When will the Open Source code for Streak Froyo be available?
UPDATED 12-14-10
A. Source code is now available at http://opensource.dell.com/releases/streak/ .

Q. What if I buy my Streak in Japan, Korea or Singapore? Will it have Froyo preinstalled?
A. Yes, Streaks purchased in Japan, Korea or Singapore will have Froyo preinstalled.

Q. What if I installed a non-Dell version of Android on my Streak? Will I still get the update?
A. No.  The update will only be deployed to Streak units which have Dell-provided versions of Android.

Q. Where is the link to the Dell Mobile Sync software?
UPDATED 4-8-11
A. On the Dell Support Site, under Drivers and Downloads:

Q. What if I don’t want to use the Dell Stage Interface?
A. You can remove it by holding down your finger on the widget shortcut and choosing the delete option.

Q. Can I run the update, even if I don’t get the official notice, by copying the URL from someone else’s device?
A.  No, the final link to download the 2.2 Froyo update will be non-functional unless the browsing session is initiated via the software update mechanism on the Streak device. This is because the software update application in the device communicates with the OTA update server to authenticate the update session.   The link to the update is dynamically set to download the correct software package based on the device that is connecting to the update server. Please wait for the software update notice to display on the device itself, when your version of the software is ready for the upgrade.  You can continue to check for updates manually by going to Menu->Settings->About device->System Updates which will connect to the update server and correctly check for an update.

Q. Why is UK getting Froyo update before US?
A. Technically, that is not true. I'd like to clarify a rumor that got started Friday because of two tweets from UK customers. They had received an update message in error last Friday. I followed up with the team that deploys the updates and found out a small set of devices may have received a “Software Update is available” notice but when they selected it, they were directed to a webpage that indicated “No software updates available at this time.”  Shortly after I sent out the apology tweets to the two users, I got an update from the deployment team apologizing for the brief glitch. They also noted that the issue was fixed and no further devices would receive notices until the actual update was turned on. This OTA update is rolling out in phases to different groups of customers. Although I can’t share the exact scheduling, I can say that this week folks who were part of the US Beta testing group will be some of the first to receive the update. Then, folks in Europe with unlocked devices will start to receive the update.

Q. Why can't I have the EXACT date when my device will receive the Froyo update?
A. This has been a very controlled release and several factors affect the rollout. There are also many reasons for not sharing specific dates. For one thing, the rollout schedule changes periodically. This allows our deployment team to stop and fix issues they may discover. Other factors include logistics and coordination/approvals from third party providers. Appreciate your feedback and patience while we continue to roll the update out.

Q. I bought my Streak Unlocked, I received the OTA Froyo update, but I am getting the redirect error. When will Dell fix this?
UPDATED 12-14-10
A. Here is the latest Android 2.2 update for the unlocked phones that are currently on Dell version 3.09 or 3.15  that fixes the issue with browser redirect errors:

Q. I bought my Streak Unlocked, but have not received the update yet.
UPDATED 12-14-10
A.  Everyone (globally) who purchased an Unlocked version of the Streak should have received an update notice by now. If not, please manually check for your update by either 1. shutting down and rebooting or 2. going to Streak Settings – About Device and selecting System Updates.

I tried the new Nero sync software and it does not work. I cannot synce my Streak to Outlook, all I see is transfering multi-media files. I have searched several other forums trying to find out if maybe you need to be on 2.2 for it to work. I did find a post saying that the Nero sync doesn't work if your PC is running 64 bit Win7. Can anyone confirm this is the case??

Hi Amy,

Thank you for the prompt response.  Another concern in regards to the update is that I am worried about the version I have.  According to the information in the phone, it states that the OEM version is "STREAK.ANDROID.HK", and when I try to check for updates through "Settings" -> "About Phone" -> "System Updates", it sends me to http://mobileupdate.dell.com/?version=STREAK.ANDROID.HK

However, when I am sent to the page, I get the following error: "Server Error in '/' Application."

It is possible to duplicate the error by following the aforementioned link.

I purchased the Dell Streak, as I stated before, through Broadway, a retail chain in Hong Kong, and am just wondering if this version of the Streak is an official version and am worried that if this version of Android is not supported by Dell, I would never get an update (even though I bought it through a retail outlet).  I believe that there are also other people in Hong Kong who have tried accessing the update page and experienced the same error.

If the page said "No update available", I would probably be more relaxed, but an error on the page puts doubt about the authenticity of the Dell Streak I purchased.  Thank you ahead of time, as any information on the OEM version, "STREAK.ANDROID.HK", and it's validity would be very much appreciated.

Hi Amy,Thanks for the quick response ,  and i really appreciate you taking  the time to answer the questions of everyone on this thread.  Regarding the unlocked streak, do you know if there will be a version that will support At&t gsm/3g bands?

I have same problem with kohiiou.

Bought the streak from same retailer, with same base band, same OEM version and same build number .

When I tried upgrade by wifi several weeks ago, it showed "your device is updated", but today it shows "sever error".

I am worried about if/when/how I could get this update. Is this OEM version an official by Dell or the retailer cheated me?

Hi Amy!

My younger brother  bough the streak from US since August and already unlocked by AT&T code for me since he know I love Dell Streak. Actually I live in Thailand and can use the streak by my local network provider, DTAC but I could not read thai in the Streak. After I know that the new update Froyo roll out so In this morning I check to the system update to update but "no software update at this time" appear at its screen. Kindly please suggest what I should do to get the update.

My OEM Version: GAUSB1A111231 and Build Number 6601.

Salut ami français!

Amy m'a déjà répondu page précédente:

"Hi Carl,

For unlocked Dell Streak purchases, I would recommend checking for the update in France in one week. There will be instructions in French included in the update.

Thank you,

Amy"

I'm pretty frustrated with the whole Dell Streak update issue, it has poisoned me against Dell specifically and manufacturers generally who seem to think its acceptable to release sub-standard products just because they can be updated later, often at the users inconvenience.

I wanted a Streak as soon as I saw it but I wouldn't buy it with Android 1.6 because I specifically wanted Flash support and I had no confindence in Dell supporting it once they had my money. When I read that the Android 2.1 update had been released I ordered my streak from Dell. I didn't realise that the 2.1 update was O2 specific and anyway by the time my Streak arrived (much later than indicated by the website but that's another story) the 2.1 update had been withdrawn due to its bugs.

So again I'm pleased with the piece of hardware Dell has delivered but frustrated by their software, support & the information provided to customers. My phone (like others) freezes occasionally or I'll go to use it and its off which means I can't rely on it as my business phone, I kept it hoping the promised update would fix these problems.

After weeks of no information we're now told that 2.2 will start rolling out to 'unlocked' customers on 15 November, well that's me and 2 days later my Streak is still not updated. It really isn't good enough. The streak is probably my last Dell purchase and definately the last time I buy something relying on a future update to provide the product I want.

I can't tell you how much I wish I'd sent it back and bought the HTC Desire HD.

3G UK and 3G US are different bands/frequencies. 3G in the UK does not guarantee 3G in the US.

There is. It just has to be a AT&T unit. 3G UK and 3G US are different bands/frequencies. AT&T 3G US works only if have the HARDWARE that works off the band. This is not a software thing. Honestly, I had a UK HTC Hero GSM here in the US and the difference between 2G(edge) and 3G is barely noticeable unless your streaming video. And if you have wireless...who needs 3G anyway?
