Dell Streak Froyo (2.2) Update Frequently Asked Questions
Hi Folks,
I created this FAQ to share updated information and answers to some of the more popular questions we've been getting. Feel free to post any additional questions and/or comments here regarding the Froyo update on the Dell Streak.
Thanks,
Amy
Q. What if I am not a current Streak owner, but I plan to buy from Best Buy or Dell directly in the U.S.? Will Froyo be pre-installed?
UPDATED 4-8-11
A. For those AT&T customers who purchased a Streak from Best Buy prior to the Froyo update, here is a link to download the update if you don’t have it already: http://mobileupdate.dell.com/PackageProductionLocations/Streak_340_14844_31.pkg
Q. When will the Open Source code for Streak Froyo be available?
UPDATED 12-14-10
A. Source code is now available at http://opensource.dell.com/releases/streak/ .
Q. What if I buy my Streak in Japan, Korea or Singapore? Will it have Froyo preinstalled?
A. Yes, Streaks purchased in Japan, Korea or Singapore will have Froyo preinstalled.
Q. What if I installed a non-Dell version of Android on my Streak? Will I still get the update?
A. No. The update will only be deployed to Streak units which have Dell-provided versions of Android.
UPDATED 4-8-11
A. On the Dell Support Site, under Drivers and Downloads:
Q. What if I don’t want to use the Dell Stage Interface?
A. You can remove it by holding down your finger on the widget shortcut and choosing the delete option.
Q. Can I run the update, even if I don’t get the official notice, by copying the URL from someone else’s device?
A. No, the final link to download the 2.2 Froyo update will be non-functional unless the browsing session is initiated via the software update mechanism on the Streak device. This is because the software update application in the device communicates with the OTA update server to authenticate the update session. The link to the update is dynamically set to download the correct software package based on the device that is connecting to the update server. Please wait for the software update notice to display on the device itself, when your version of the software is ready for the upgrade. You can continue to check for updates manually by going to Menu->Settings->About device->System Updates which will connect to the update server and correctly check for an update.
Q. Why is UK getting Froyo update before US?
A. Technically, that is not true. I'd like to clarify a rumor that got started Friday because of two tweets from UK customers. They had received an update message in error last Friday. I followed up with the team that deploys the updates and found out a small set of devices may have received a “Software Update is available” notice but when they selected it, they were directed to a webpage that indicated “No software updates available at this time.” Shortly after I sent out the apology tweets to the two users, I got an update from the deployment team apologizing for the brief glitch. They also noted that the issue was fixed and no further devices would receive notices until the actual update was turned on. This OTA update is rolling out in phases to different groups of customers. Although I can’t share the exact scheduling, I can say that this week folks who were part of the US Beta testing group will be some of the first to receive the update. Then, folks in Europe with unlocked devices will start to receive the update.
Q. Why can't I have the EXACT date when my device will receive the Froyo update?
A. This has been a very controlled release and several factors affect the rollout. There are also many reasons for not sharing specific dates. For one thing, the rollout schedule changes periodically. This allows our deployment team to stop and fix issues they may discover. Other factors include logistics and coordination/approvals from third party providers. Appreciate your feedback and patience while we continue to roll the update out.
Q. I bought my Streak Unlocked, I received the OTA Froyo update, but I am getting the redirect error. When will Dell fix this?
UPDATED 12-14-10
A. Here is the latest Android 2.2 update for the unlocked phones that are currently on Dell version 3.09 or 3.15 that fixes the issue with browser redirect errors:
Q. I bought my Streak Unlocked, but have not received the update yet.
UPDATED 12-14-10
A. Everyone (globally) who purchased an Unlocked version of the Streak should have received an update notice by now. If not, please manually check for your update by either 1. shutting down and rebooting or 2. going to Streak Settings – About Device and selecting System Updates.

I am very glad that I didn't wait for Dell to do the official update for the AT&T locked Streaks. They must be having considerable issues with it since they have let the Dec 31 deadline pass without any word.
Seems they are in way over their heads with these mobile devices and dealing with AT&T.
Anyway head over the the XDA forums and look at the info there on the Streak. Join the forum and enjoy the community there of people who will help you get the most out of the device. Otherwise it's like an expensive paperweight.

They did tell you it was being delayed: http://en.community.dell.com/dell-blogs/Direct2Dell/b/direct2dell/archive/2010/12/09/at-amp-t-sim-locked-units-and-the-froyo-update.aspx
Fact of the matter is if you bought a locked streak at best buy or from Dell.com you knew it had 1.6 and would have to wait till the update came out. Yes delivery times can slip and be pushed back. Would it have been better if you never hear anything from Dell about getting 2.2. If they never said it would get it? You will be getting the update you just have to wait for AT&T to approve it. The streak is not the only phone that hasn't gotten 2.2
Look at all the Galaxy S phones in the US. None of them have gotten it and those phones have been out longer than the streak. If you don't want to wait for 2.2 then go to the various other android community sites and get help in flashing to 2.2. I did it last night for a friend of mine who bought his streak through best buy. Used the QDL Tool and got it up and running to the most current US released froyo version.
Yes it sucks they pushed the update date back several times and now won't give you a firm date but I bet its because they don't have a firm date when AT&T will approve it. If you want a streak with froyo on it now then order an unlocked one. I sent my locked AT&T 1.6 streak back and reordered to get the unlocked one just so I could get the OTA update for froyo asap. If you can't do that then flash it, if you won't try that then just wait. The opportunity to get 2.2 right now is in your hands if you don't want to wait for AT&T anymore.

Very nice of them to start a forum dedicated to the update 2.2 froyo for Dell streak and then start a blog in a DIFFERENT location, not in mobile devices, not in the FORUMS where it was initially posted.
Furthermore I didnt say i didnt buy a LOCKED STREAK, nor am i complaining about us never going to recieve the update, you took it upon yourself to say that. All i stated was that there has been no update, ON THE FORUM POST DELL ORIGINALLY POSTED, notifying the customers.
Im not a board FOR DELL to talk about SAMSUNG phones, thats not the argument, nor is it the topic.
i would continue but i dont care, arguing with you or anyone else on the board will not make any update happen faster, im just bringing info to the board

While I agree with the rest of your post, this is incorrect. The Dell Streak running Donut is quite functional. The one I have makes and receives phone calls, texts, emails, etc. It also surfs the web via 3G or wifi, takes pictures, runs Google Maps great, and a lot more.
That's a helluva paperweight.

Kabinoff, for what it's worth, I appreciate what you did. Anyone here who attacks someone for expecting quality offered by other products in the same segment are trained fools.
I share in your expectation of quality, transparency and at least a willful effort to produce a good product. We clearly know Dell and several carriers are attempting to deceive their customers.
While here in Canada, I have no alternative service provider due to our corporate communist government who are legalizing telecom mono/duopolies, the best thing we can all do is avoid their services and continue to voice our displeasure. This also means that Dell has likely secured a bad enough reputation for themselves in the mobile phone market that they'll be walking away from it by Q4 2011. Much the same way they've already walked away from the Streak. History tends to repeat itself when it comes to lazy and greedy companies.
Sadly, this has also reshaped my opinion of Dell as a general PC maker, who I had come to favour recently for laptops. I think System76 and the myriad of other options out there are more deserving of peoples' hard earned money. No less with Dell, they expect you to pay money and time to properly support the products they sell you.
Care to comment Dell? I didn't think so.

Very true, but for those so fed up with 1.6 that they are not using the $500 dollar Streak it's essentially a paper weight.
I used my Streak when it had 1.6 and even waited until mid November before doing the manual update because I could still do the basics and more with it compared to my other smartphones (BB Curve, HTC Tilt). What I couldn't do, remote desktop, bluetooth, and flash was very annoying so I updated my phone instead of waiting.
The Streak with 2.2 is awesome, but there are a few annoyances like changes in the browser functionality and the loss of Outlook syncing with tasks and notes. With the help of apps I am getting the lost functionality back though.
Eventually someone will get Gingerbread installed and running on the Streak and that will probably require a manual upgrade/installation.

Guys guys guys really seriously. Why not drop it? I see all the complaining and I agree with the complaining however, it is getting you no where seriously no where. I love the fact that I'll be trolled for those comments I just made.
Anyhow my points remains the following,
1. This is dell's first time in the mobile space, not making excuses for them but just saying...
2. They promised an update, they'll release it eventually, you cannot deny the fact that O2 has theirs and my factory unlocked streak has froyo, my unlocked streak was updated manually, not my preference but done nonetheless. Its pretty snappy now.
3. While many of you may think that complaining and bashing dell will bring you great results it may backfire, Dell may choose to stop selling the streak based on the low American demand for the product and then you'll really have a 500 dollar paper weight with no future support. Granted Dell will probably not support the streak past 2.2 anyways and just focus on Streak 7 with Honey Comb...
4. All in all people, Dell isnt that bad, speak to vibrant and captivate users, its horrible hardware wise and they've been out longer with no real promise to go to Froyo until very recent. I had froyo on my streak before........wait....... the captivate people still dont have it.
I'll admit its bad Dell launched with 1.6 and in all honesty I liked the GUI better and the taskbar a million times better, but who knows maybe it gave them more reason to give us 2.2. They still need to tweak some stability issues in 2.2 but overall its good, I miss the old taskbar though I need it back it was quite functional.
I won't mention many more of my gripes on here for fear of being moderated again but regardless of my gripes and the moderation I have shown many others some awesome stuff on the streak and watched the Ooo and awe from other Android owners due to the smoothness compared to some other hardware.
I will also agree the fact that Dell has straight out left the forum aside from moderation is not very becoming of a corporate company. You meet the issues head on and sort it out. If anything make it a closed thread that you update frequently. I think they may leave Android phone space though.
And to the trollers that will follow, Happy new year !

I agree Anthony, seems to be lots of moaning about nothing more than being too impatient to wait.
I was quite happy to wait for both 2.1 and 2,2, there really was nothing majorly wrong with 1.6 at all, I liked it just fine, better than windows mobile or IPHONE for sure. In the end I didn;t have to wait very long for either of them anyway/
There is absolutely nothing wrong with 1.6 that would actually stop you using the phone, and those who think it is a paperweight really must be slightly deranged or are really looking for a totally different type of phone, in which case Froyo wont help them.
In fact I would actually say there has been more I dislike about 2.1 and 2.2 and I lost features I liked. The streak is a good tablet with a built in phone and pretty much does everything you need. Browsing, IM, email, games etc to a high standard, has a good hires screen and the phone works well. The only thing I really have to complain about is the battery life, but that is true of all such devices I am told.
Fair enough if you have bugs or issues that Dell will not fix and wont respond to you then you have reaosn to complain, but if you have only posted here and not bothered to contact Dell direct, then more the fool you, it has been said many times Dell do not look at the forums other than the muppet with delusions of grandeur who moderates them.
But whinging and moaning over and over because you may have to wait a month or 2 longer for Froyo, seriously, does anyone's entire life really revolve arou getting the latest version of Android, can you really not get on with your life without it, is your every waking moment consumed by the thought of it, are you really that sad ? I suspect not, so forget about it and just wait for the update, do something else to entertain yourself in the mean time, the time will pass far more quickly when you are not thinking about it.

Both of you guys have no idea what most of the people here have done to contact Dell, so why have you assumed that they haven't? Is that the only way you can make a justifiable argument to defend them? Pretty lame. The mere fact alone that anyone posts here is pretty significant.
As far as supporting the product, anyone who has bought a Dell streak has gone above and beyond the call of duty in even keeping the device with this poor of support. Many of which were promised levels of support not yet delivered. For the others who are putting 2.2 firmwares from DJ Steve or managing to run other firmwares, they've gone and done Dell's job for them.
And some of you are so asinine as to think Streak owners shouldn't be upset? Get real. Lordsnake 1.6 is several generations behind. So much so that you in fact can't run all the software that the Snapdragon CPU in the Streak is capable of running. People have observed up to 5x performance improvements. Consider it the difference between running your computer without video drivers and with. It is literally a situation of Android 1.6 actually not having the optimizations in it at all. So you say "you can use it as a phone, go away". You're skipping out 99% of the rest of the argument by saying it does one of it's several features? Again, this is just so disingenuous and dismissive, I'd have to question whether or not you're just a ghost account run by Dell to do damage control.
People have been waiting longer than 2 months for Froyo. It's gotten so bad that Froyo is going to be obsolete by the time Dell even gets it to everyone. Pretty pathetic, and you have no business telling people to be happy about this ham fisted level of support.
If you don't like hearing people rightfully complain about this very bad situation, then don't read this thread. Otherwise, stop trolling.

I think both Anthony and atrauzzi make valid points. As consumers have an obligation to provide feedback to companies we buy from. How can we reasonably expect Dell to make changes unless they understand what upsets us. If 100 people complain, that says one thing but if 10,000 people complain about something that says something different. 100 people is "noise" and probably not worth the cost to fix something. Whereas, if 10,000 people say this needs to be fixed then it becomes more important to a company to do something about it. I also agree that we need to read the information on forums too, much of what I have read is repeats of existing questions. But having tried to search multiple forum websites (not just Dell but any forum), it isn't always easy for one to locate the information they are seeking. What is so difficult for many of us is the perception of fairness. Why is it that some people have the upgrade while others are forced to wait without any real knowledge of how long they must wait? My conversations with Dell employees have been sympathetic and as best they can, helpful. I don't harbor any ill will towards any person at Dell, however, I think the process and information the company have provided really needs some significant improvement.

Foolish little troll boy? Who is the troll now?
Re-read your post, then you'll understand why my point is right, and why the next person to post after me supports it. You're definitely in the minority for accepting mediocrity And just because you have no problem with it doesn't mean others shouldn't either.
My original suggestion remains. You probably have no reason to be here, so why are you bothering to post still?
That's right, you're a troll.

@Atrauzzi, relax bro as someone said earlier you may live longer. No but seriously, the main reason I'm nonchalant about the whole thing maybe because I have 1 streak that came with 2.2 and one I manually updated, seemed easy enough. But I hear you, I empthaize.
The only thing I was trying to point out is that its clear that Dell is not making anything happen as a result of people bash posting here, I'm not a dummy account I really just dont believe anything is coming out of this, as an avid android fan, I cringe to use this statement, but so called fragmenta.... ughhh, anyhow that word is par for the course in our Android world or so said Steve J, but manufacturers being behind with OS updates is what happens. The other company sells both the hardware and the software and thrives on loyalty having customers come back for their new iteration of their software and hardware and making the rest of the world iSheep. Anyhow Android is separate and while the OS is long term and forward looking hardware manufacturers are in it for a quick buck not a lifetime following.
So all in all if it makes you feel better to come on here and vent, more power to you and all who do, I guess I just felt like bringing some reality to it along the lines of Dell isnt reading this and they probably dont or can't care, the idevice loving death star or carrier your phone is locked too is the clear cause of the delay, call dell all you want but they signed a contract with those carriers and until that carrier says release it you and me are STUCK, well not me so much but you get the gist.
You and all others, myself included, do have the option of buying another device and selling the streak on some auction site, I however love my streak and won't be joining you anytime soon, especially with tethering as an option. But I hear ya man I hear ya, Android has to make updates a function of the market so we can all avoid this kind of stuff and we'll all be streak brothers and sisters.
Cheers
