Dell Streak Froyo (2.2) Update Frequently Asked Questions

Hi Folks,
I created this FAQ to share updated information and answers to some of the more popular questions we've been getting. Feel free to post any additional questions and/or comments here regarding the Froyo update on the Dell Streak.

Thanks,
Amy

Q. What if I am not a current Streak owner, but I plan to buy from Best Buy or Dell directly in the U.S.? Will Froyo be pre-installed?
UPDATED 4-8-11
A. For those AT&T customers who purchased a Streak from Best Buy prior to the Froyo update, here is a link to download the update if you don’t have it already: http://mobileupdate.dell.com/PackageProductionLocations/Streak_340_14844_31.pkg
Also, Streak with Froyo pre-installed is currently available on www.dell.com in the U.S.

Q. When will the Open Source code for Streak Froyo be available?
UPDATED 12-14-10
A. Source code is now available at http://opensource.dell.com/releases/streak/ .

Q. What if I buy my Streak in Japan, Korea or Singapore? Will it have Froyo preinstalled?
A. Yes, Streaks purchased in Japan, Korea or Singapore will have Froyo preinstalled.

Q. What if I installed a non-Dell version of Android on my Streak? Will I still get the update?
A. No.  The update will only be deployed to Streak units which have Dell-provided versions of Android.

Q. Where is the link to the Dell Mobile Sync software?
UPDATED 4-8-11
A. On the Dell Support Site, under Drivers and Downloads:

Q. What if I don’t want to use the Dell Stage Interface?
A. You can remove it by holding down your finger on the widget shortcut and choosing the delete option.

Q. Can I run the update, even if I don’t get the official notice, by copying the URL from someone else’s device?
A.  No, the final link to download the 2.2 Froyo update will be non-functional unless the browsing session is initiated via the software update mechanism on the Streak device. This is because the software update application in the device communicates with the OTA update server to authenticate the update session.   The link to the update is dynamically set to download the correct software package based on the device that is connecting to the update server. Please wait for the software update notice to display on the device itself, when your version of the software is ready for the upgrade.  You can continue to check for updates manually by going to Menu->Settings->About device->System Updates which will connect to the update server and correctly check for an update.

Q. Why is UK getting Froyo update before US?
A. Technically, that is not true. I'd like to clarify a rumor that got started Friday because of two tweets from UK customers. They had received an update message in error last Friday. I followed up with the team that deploys the updates and found out a small set of devices may have received a “Software Update is available” notice but when they selected it, they were directed to a webpage that indicated “No software updates available at this time.”  Shortly after I sent out the apology tweets to the two users, I got an update from the deployment team apologizing for the brief glitch. They also noted that the issue was fixed and no further devices would receive notices until the actual update was turned on. This OTA update is rolling out in phases to different groups of customers. Although I can’t share the exact scheduling, I can say that this week folks who were part of the US Beta testing group will be some of the first to receive the update. Then, folks in Europe with unlocked devices will start to receive the update.

Q. Why can't I have the EXACT date when my device will receive the Froyo update?
A. This has been a very controlled release and several factors affect the rollout. There are also many reasons for not sharing specific dates. For one thing, the rollout schedule changes periodically. This allows our deployment team to stop and fix issues they may discover. Other factors include logistics and coordination/approvals from third party providers. Appreciate your feedback and patience while we continue to roll the update out.

Q. I bought my Streak Unlocked, I received the OTA Froyo update, but I am getting the redirect error. When will Dell fix this?
UPDATED 12-14-10
A. Here is the latest Android 2.2 update for the unlocked phones that are currently on Dell version 3.09 or 3.15  that fixes the issue with browser redirect errors:

Q. I bought my Streak Unlocked, but have not received the update yet.
UPDATED 12-14-10
A.  Everyone (globally) who purchased an Unlocked version of the Streak should have received an update notice by now. If not, please manually check for your update by either 1. shutting down and rebooting or 2. going to Streak Settings – About Device and selecting System Updates.

@manolita

I was under the impression, from searching so many times for solutions to upgrading the Streak, that  the Rebel card unlocks the phone?

Have you tried going to this address in your browser?

http://mobileupdate.dell.com/PackageProductionLocations/Streak_318_12821_00.pkg

Just cause you unlock a streak whether its with rebel sim or through getting a code from your carrier that doesn't mean you can update using that url.  Your baseband version is still the same as what it was before you unlocked and that seems to be what the update servers are checking to see if you can update or not.  The only way to get 2.2 on a locked streak is to use the QDL tool (info at streaksmart.com or xda-developers.com) to update to build 305 then you can use that url to update to 318 or manually flashing to the O2 builds to get up to the current 2.2 (info at streak.modaco.com) or you can flash your streak to DJ_Steve's current custom rom which is version 1.6.0 (its still 2.2 1.6.0 is just his version number) which IMHO is the best rom to put on this phone.  Did that to mine the other day and it makes the streak fly.  Its amazing.

this..in 2 words...wath mean?? that must I wait or sell my streak?:) I don't understand very well english language.

It's now the middle of January 2011. Which version of Android is your Dell Streak running?

If you've got yourself an AT&T-locked Streak and aren't already running one of DJ_Steve's amazing StreakDroid Froyo ROMs, which is now at version 1.6.0, then I bet you're still using Android 1.6 (Donut). You're probably part of the only group of Streak users still on Donut left in the world and based on a company email I received from a tipster, it looks like you'll continue to be sans Froyo for at least a few more weeks.

The last word we heard about the official OTA update for AT&T-locked Streaks was that it would be coming this week. But considering that it's now Friday and many of you are still looking at Donut on your Streaks, it's safe to say that the update has once again been delayed.

Here's the body of an internal Dell email that was forwarded to me:
Sorry for getting back to you so late, but as you probably guessed we / AT&T are not releasing the update this week. I'd say a couple of more weeks at least. AT&T is pretty thorough in their QA sessions and that's where we are.

I'm sure that Dell isn't completely blameless for the delay, but AT&T is undoubtedly the main party at fault here.

According to an article published just yesterday at Computerworld, AT&T is "the least desirable [carrier] choice for Android" and has so far "failed to upgrade a single one of its nine Android phones" to Froyo. So if it's any consolation to you Donut users out there, the Streak isn't the only one that AT&T is leaving out in the cold.

Thanks, tipster!

@socallife It's now GAUSB1A131800-US, after doing the QLD update, and the official dell update. I got my phone on release day from dell, and it was definitely not one of the ones eligible for the automatic update (as the now available unlocked versions are).

It's well worth doing the steps, but it's very important to read through all of the guides carefully, or you can make some missteps. I definitely recommend having a good understanding of the procedure first, and then going through the guide and pausing it until each step is completed successfully.

Dear Dell Services
The biggest mistake that I bought a Dell will show you I am not obliged to wait for AT & T has bought two without a contract, when I bought the device and found the beautiful words and good marketing, but did not reveal what your service after the sale it's worse than bad and there is no support
I promise you I will tell all my friends not to deal with you, I do not represent something great, but the footprint would be a shame for you
Thank you for your Bad support

Amy

Could you please help me. I can't update to 2.2, when I try it says

"an unrecognized software version has accessed the update server"

my streak has:

firmware version: 1.6

baseband version: GAUSB1A110700-EU

Kernel version: 2.6.29-perf

OEM Version: GAUSB1A110700

Build number: 4399

I purchased it unlocked direct from dell UK. Perhaps the problem is I followed the instruction on

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&cs=19&docid=279504&l=en&s=dhs

which says  you may update to the latest version of 2.2 by using your Streak device go to the following URL on
http://mobileupdate.dell.com/PackageProductionLocations/Streak_318_12821_00.pkg

In any case I am now stuck. Could you please tell me what to do now.

Thanks

Hi hao99,

I had the same issue after getting a replacement from my insurance company, all you have to do is direct your browser to the link below which is the official dell update for baseband ending 700-EU

CHC01A,

AT&T Streaks do not yet have an official 2.2 upgrade available, however the last that was posted indicated that possibly the second week of Feb would bring that update to AT&T subscribers.

Keep checking here and if it is released then I am sure you will see people shouting to the rooftops when it is available.
